Australia’s David Warner could break Sachin Tendulkar’s record with another ton at Newlands against South Africa

  • David Warner can become the first ever foreign batsman to score more than 2 test centuries at Newlands, Cape Town.
  • Of all the traveling players, only Sachin Tendulkar, Michael Clarke, and David Warner have more than 1 century at Newlands, Cape Town

David Warner is on the verge of achieving a unique record in South Africa vs Australia 3rd test match to be played at Newlands in Cape Town, as Warner could break the long-standing Sachin Tendulkar record of scoring multiple test centuries at Newlands Cape Town by a foreign batsman. Out of the 55 test matches played at Newlands Cape Town, only Sachin Tendulkar (2 Test Hundreds), Michael Clarke (2 Test Hundreds) and David Warner himself are the only foreign players to score more than 1 test match centuries at the venue.

Cape Town has always been the favored ground for the Proteas where Jacques Kallis has scored 9 centuries at Newlands, followed by Daryll Cullinan and Graeme Smith who had scored 4 centuries at the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town. Traveling players have found it hard to negate the seam bowling options from South Africa in recent years at Newlands Cape Town where the likes of Allan Donald, Dale Steyn and lately Vernon Philander have dominated the opposition batsmen.

Warner played one of the most remarkable innings at Cape Town

What puts David Warner a class apart from all the other traveling players is that both of his centuries at Newlands Cape Town came in the same test match and at a brisk pace. Warner smashed 135 runs in the first innings of just 152 balls while in the 2nd innings, Warner raced to 145 runs of just 156 balls including 4 sixes in the second innings at Newlands Cape Town. As a result, Australia won the match by a huge margin of 245 runs and Warner established himself as a proper test batsman against a quality attack like Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, and Vernon Philander.

Having scored those 2 memorable hundreds, Warner is on the verge of breaking the Sachin Tendulkar record and in the process give the much-needed edge to the Australian team in the ongoing series. After winning the 1st test match, Australia came against a fired-up Kagiso Rabada and the South African side and lost the 2nd South Africa vs Australia test match convincingly. Warner and the Australian side will need to be at their best to avoid another win for the South African and continue to be alive in the series. Warner will also look to reach his personal milestone and break Sachin Tendulkar’s record and become the first ever traveling batsman to score more than 2 test centuries.
