- India Women cricket team captain Mithali Raj commented on BCCI’s reported plan to hold a Women IPL event, which would be the female counterpart to the Indian Premier League
- Present at a press conference at BCCI’s headquarters in Mumbai, Mithali and Jhulan Goswami said that in order to host a Women IPL, the India Women cricket setup needed to be strong at the domestic level
India Women Cricket team captain Mithali Raj and pacer Jhulan Goswami commented on Tuesday on BCCI’s reported intention to hold an Indian Premier League-like event for India Women Cricket team. Mithali Raj said that a Women IPL event would only make sense when the BCCI first makes sure that there is a “strong domestic” setup for India Women Cricket.
Need quality players for Women IPL, says India Women Cricket Team Captain Mithali Raj
Mithali Raj was present alongside Jhulan Goswami at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on March 20, 2018, ahead of the India Women Cricket team’s Tri-Series. India Women Cricket team captain Mithali said, as reported by DNA India,
“It’s important to have the pool of players, who will be qualified to play IPL kind of a league. As I mentioned (in) India A (team) itself we need quality players. Once we have those many players then it will be wise enough to have an IPL.”
Exhibition Matches scheduled for India Women Cricket during IPL 2018
It is also reported, that in a bid to advance closer to the concept of a Women IPL, the BCCI is organising exhibition matches for women during the upcoming 11th season of the Indian Premier League.
The BCCI thought the moment right to organise such exhibition matches during IPL 2018, as it would be easier to realise the practicality of holding a Women IPL, especially with the growing popularity and success of India Women Cricket team stars such as; Harmanpreet Kaur, Mithali and Jhulan Goswami. These exhibition matches would also lay the groundwork for a women IPL event.
Mithali presses for a “strong domestic setup”
Mithali Raj said, “You can feed in any domestic (players) but then there will be a stark difference between an international player and domestic player. It might go against promoting women’s cricket. So, I personally believe that when you have strong domestic set-up and churning quality players then giving them an opportunity in IPL makes sense.”
Women in Blue’s veteran pacer Jhulan Goswami agreed right away with her Test captain, and said, “That is absolutely right, the domestic set up needs to be a little more stronger.”
India Women Cricket team will be a part of the upcoming T20 cricket tri series, involving Australia Women Cricket team and England Women Cricket team, and Mithali Raj says that it is the right time to get her team’s combination right, as both England and Australia are tough contenders in Women’s World Cricket.
“The team is now preparing for the T20 World Cup this year and it’s important that before the World Cup we need to have combinations right. And for that if we have to have few changes in the squad, irrespective of whether the result goes our way or not, it is important because we see the bigger picture preparing for the World Cup,” Mithali said.
