Probably the most inconsistent team in IPL history, Kings XI Punjab will enter IPL 2018 as one of the firm favourites to lift their maiden title after a hugely successful IPL 2018 auction in January 2018. Axar Patel was the only player retained by the team management before the IPL 2018 auction as they decided to change their strategy from bringing in young unknown players to buying some of the worlds biggest T20 stars prior to this season. KXIP team 2018 acquired players like Chris Gayle, Yuvraj Singh, Aaron Finch and David Miller in the IPL 2018 auction, something that will make them the biggest force to reckon with come April 7th when Mumbai Indians take on Chennai Super Kings in the IPL opener.
Yuvraj Singh will be returning to the team where he started his IPL career from in first season. Since then, the 36-year-old has shifted base many a time only to come back to KXIP team 2018 hoping to win his 1st ever IPL title and give the fans what they have been desperate for in the past decade. Chris Gayle will also be part of the explosive batting line-up after being purchased in the auction only after the third-time asking in IPL auction 2018. The most interesting decision by the team management was handing over the captaincy responsibility to Ravichandran Ashwin, who has led a domestic side in the past but never an IPL team. It will be interesting to see how the off-spinner copes with the pressure and how he performs given that he is no longer India’s first choice spinner in the limited overs format. He surely would have been pleased at the how the team did in the IPL 2018 auction and the squad they managed to build.
Kings XI Punjab owner Mohit Burman took time out of his busy schedule and spoke to Cricketnext this week about the team’s performance till now in IPL and strategies in IPL 2018 auction. Speaking about the changes he has seen around him in the last 10 years as the league has grown bigger and bigger with each passing season, Mohit said, “Certainly a lot has changed; we have concentrated on taking our game to the next level. Some teams haven’t survived. Some have faced suspension and have returned. We have had our own hiccups but have been here for 11 years and I hope to be here for the next 11.”
Unlike last year, Kings XI Punjab (KXIP team 2018) enters IPL 2018 with a strong core consisting of mainly Indian players, something they didn’t ever manage in the previous seasons but had the resources to achieve in IPL 2018 auction. Players like KL Rahul and Karun Nair will be vital assets for their team given how valuable a good Indian player is in IPL 2018. Mohit Burman did elaborate on their strategy this year and what they did differently. He said, “Earlier we were a bit light in this department (Indian players) and were clever thinkers in terms of spending the money. But our buying strategy has changed to include more stars as well as include the youngsters and give the best possible XI to the coaches so that we can win the tournament.”
Mohit Burman reveals KXIP plan was to keep the core intact for IPL 2018
Following a massive IPL 2018 auction, speaking about this constant chipping and chopping that the IPL teams have to go through every few years, Burman didn’t appear to be much disturbed by it and felt that the governing body and the teams have devised a strategy so that the overhaul isn’t too deep also. He said, “That maybe true to a certain extent but the teams and BCCI have kept this is mind. That is why you have the retention rule and also the right to match card. The whole idea is to keep the core together and then add/subtract whatever you dislike.”
At the Mohit Burman gave a vote of confidence to Ravichandran Ashwin who will be taking up the captaincy role for the first time in IPL for KXIP team 2018. The management is very excited about their choice and they do expect the results to be majoritively be in their favour in IPL 2018. “A few nerves yes but I am looking forward to what should be an exciting season. Hodge and Sehwag have made a consensual decision and I totally agree with it. I feel this year you’re going to see one of our best performances ever,” Burman concluded.
Kings XI Punjab (KXIP Team 2018) start their IPL 2018 campaign against Delhi Daredevils at home in the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali.
