I-League club Chennai City FC have announced the appointment of Mohammad Akbar Bin Abdul Nawas as the club’s new head coach, with FC Barcelona’s Jordi Villa taking up the role of assistant coach and director of the team’s youth development program. Akbar, a former S-League and Singapore youth team player has already been at the helm of affairs for the club in the ongoing India Super Cup 2018.
The 43-year-old Singapore national is an AFC Pro Diploma Licence coach and has been associated with Chennai City FC in the I-League as a technical consultant in the recent past. Mohammad Akbar Bin Abdul Nawas will now take over as the man in the hotseat for the club from V Soundararajan.
Chennai City FC slipped out of India Super Cup 2018
Under the latter’s guidance, the team could manage a eighth place finish in the recently concluded I-League and have had to endure going through the India Super Cup 2018 qualifiers to make it to the league of big boys in the tournament, wherein they lost to two-time ISL champions ATK and will now take no further part in the competition this year.

With the experienced Akbar taking over as head coach and Barcelona’s Jordi Villa as his assistant, Chennai City FC have already chalked out their plans for the next I-League season and will be hoping for a much better show, starting from the next pre-season.
Akbar has coached Singapore’s junior sides at various age group levels in the past and has also managed multiple top flight clubs in Singapore and the Philippines.
“We expect them (Akbar and Villa) to help in building the club,” Chennai City FC owner Rohit Ramesh said after announcing the appointment, as reported by Sportskeeda.
The I-League has been going through interesting times in recent years with Aizawl FC and Minerva FC emerging as champions in the last two seasons. Chennai City FC will also have their hopes pinned on the new backroom staff to showcase their expertise and lead the club to glory in the 2018/19 season.
