Ever since making his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut for the Rising Pune Supergiant last year, Washington Sundar has been steadily acquiring fans and followers across the country. His consistent domestic performances for Tamil Nadu also earned him a maiden India call-up in December last year against Sri Lanka and at the age of 18 years and 80 days which made Sundar became the youngest player to debut for India in T20Is.

Fast forward to March 2018 and Washington Sundar has already won his first Man of the Series award for his country. The 18-year-old was mightily impressive in the Nidahas Trophy tri-series and showed nerves of steel while bowling in the crucial powerplay overs. As a result, the Tamil Nadu all-rounder is now a household name in the country and will be one of the players to watch out for in IPL 2018.

1. Washington Sundar was born in Chennai on October 5, 1999. He started playing cricket at the age of 11 in the second division league in Chennai.

2. Washington belongs to a cricket playing family. His father was his first coach. He was a cricketer himself who made it to the Ranji probable list but never to the main squad. Sister MS Shelaja has also played cricket.

3. His name, Washington, is a tribute to his father’s mentor, an ex-army man, P D Washington. The teenager’s father had scarce monetary resources and P D Washington paid for his school uniform, his school fees and his books.

4. Washington Sundar was chosen to play for Rising Pune Supergiant in IPL 2017 after he castled captain Steve Smith in the nets. He came in as a replacement for Ravichandran Ashwin.

5. In 2014, Sundar was included in the India Under-19 team at the age of 15.  He made crucial contributions with his spin bowling in India Under-19’s journey in the World Cup 2016 where they reached the finals under coach Rahul Dravid.

6. With his amazing performances at the Under-19 level, Sunder made a first-class debut for Tamil Nadu in October 2016.

7. Sundar was picked up by Albert TUTI Patriots to take part in the inaugural edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier league in 2016, where he impressed everyone with his bowling.

8. Sundar gives a lot of credit to M Venkataramana, his coach at the National Cricket Academy and Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. “The two years I was with him in NCA, that was the time when my bowling started to evolve,” he says. “He changed a couple of things for me, which worked in a big way. He is someone who played a very important role in me being here as an off spinner.”
