- Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is against ICC’s idea of changing the format of ICC Champions Trophy 2021 from ODI to T20I
- The Indian cricket board is threatening to pull out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2021 if ICC continue to back ICC Champions Trophy T20 International
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is in a strong opposition to ICC’s idea of changing the format of ICC Champions Trophy 2021 from ODI to T20I. Sources close to the Indian Cricket Board have claimed that the Indian team and BCCI could even look to offer a boycott from ICC Champions Trophy 2021 if the ICC continue to push for a change of format, and keep backing the ICC Champions Trophy T20 format.
BCCI against the ICC Champions Trophy T20I format
Sources close to the Indian Cricket Board believe that the authority respects the format of ICC Champions Trophy in an ODI setup, as the tournament was a brainchild of former BCCI President Jagmohan Dalmiya and it is on the eve of his 5th death anniversary when India will be hosting the ICC Champions Trophy 2021 and BCCI at no cost are ready for any change of format to the ICC Champions Trophy 2021.
ICC trying to reason BCCI over taxes
ICC meanwhile are ready to change the venue for ICC Champions Trophy 2021 outside India to save massive taxes imposed by the Indian government and in order to cut their projected losses and improve revenue distribution for member boards in the 2019 financial year. Despite ICC’s valid reasons, BCCI are not ready to bend down to ICC’s plans of changing the format from ODI to ICC Champions Trophy T20 International, and are ready to pull their hands from the competition altogether.
A source close to BCCI said, as reported by the Deccan Chronicle, “The format cannot and will not change. The Champions Trophy was introduced as part of the vision of our former president Jagmohan Dalmiya and it’ll be his fifth anniversary when the tournament is hosted by India. This (proposed) move has been brought to the notice of the (BCCI) members and should the ICC persist, there’ll be a strong opposition from India.”
ICC do not know the what they are going against as BCCI and Team India are the most marketable team in the international cricket at the moment and if India decides to back out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2021 over the ICC Champions Trophy T20 International format, it can lead to massive loss to ICC and will have a massive blow to their hopes of recovering the past losses.
