- Former India batsman and Sunrisers Hyderabad mentor VVS Laxman explained the rationale behind buying Wriddhiman Saha for IPL 2018
- VVS Laxman claimed that Saha has established himself as Team India’s leading wicket-keeper after MS Dhoni’s retirement from Test cricket
- SRH also has Afghanistan mystery spinner Rashid Khan, and having a strong wicket-keeper will only pay rich dividends for the team in IPL 2018
After MS Dhoni’s retirement from Test cricket, Wriddhiman Saha emerged as the second best wicketkeeper for Team India. And owing to his excellent performances that didn’t let the audiences miss Dhoni in Test cricket, Saha was bagged by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the IPL 2018 auction. As the preparation and practice for all franchises is starting to picking up pace and heat, former India batsman and current mentor of SRH, VVS Laxman, revealed why Wriddhiman Saha was bought by the IPL champions of 2017.
Wriddhiman Saha is Team India’s Test wicket-keeper and a reliable run-scorer, explains VVS Laxman
Speaking to the media in Kolkata, VVS Laxman threw light on the rationales which Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) had kept in mind while bagging Wriddhiman Saha for INR 5 crore. SRH also retained their ace Afghanistan leg-spinner, Rashid Khan, from last IPL season, who has now established himself as the world’s leading mystery spinner. And naturally, any team that has a quality spinner will benefit from the presence of a specialist wicket-keeper, i.e. Wriddhiman Saha. VVS Laxman said, as reported by Crictracker,
“We have Rashid Khan in the squad. He can bowl flipper and googly in his armory. Wriddhiman Saha is now the best Wicketkeeper in India. He already did well in the sub-continent. He keeps well when Jadeja and Ashwin bowl in tests.”
“Not only he can keep well but also he can bat well in the shortest format of the game. He can play in any position and he is a terrific run getter,” added VVS Laxman.
In India’s first Test in Cape Town against South Africa, Wriddhiman Saha created the record of pocketing 10 catches in a single Test, going past MS Dhoni’s record, who has nine catches to his name as world’s one of the best wicket keepers.
Wriddhiman Saha has played 104 IPL matches
Wriddhiman Saha has accumulated a great deal of experience in the Indian Premier League, which will help the SRH in IPL 2018. Saha has played 104 IPL matches, in which he has amassed 1,557 runs with a strike rate of 130.73, which was boosted by one century and 6 half centuries. Currently, Saha is recovering from a hamstring injury that he picked up while playing the first rubber because of which he also missed the last two Tests in South Africa.
