The main attraction in the upcoming season of Indian Premier League (IPL 2018) could well be the return of former champions Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings. A lot of players will return to their former team just like youngster Sanju Samson who rose to instant stardom with his brilliant performances for Royals before the team was suspended. The 23-year-old played the last seasons with Delhi Daredevils where his performances were highly appreciated even though the team didn’t do that well.

Sanju Samson excited to learn from Shane Warne in IPL 2018

Sanju Samson was bought by Rajasthan Royals in a IPL 2018 auction conducted at the end of January 2018. During the past 4 years, Sanju Samson has become the youngest player to reach 1000 IPL runs and has also become a valuable asset given his wicket-keeping talent. Speaking about his return to Rajasthan Royals and working under legendary Australian spinner Shane Warne, who will be mentoring RR in IPL 2018, Sanju Samson said,

“I am blessed to be back in Rajasthan Royals and want to give my best to the team. I am eagerly awaiting my meeting with Warne and am looking forward to play under his directions. As I have never met him, my excitement is all the more increasing with each passing day. I will definitely be learning a lot from the veteran player.”

The fact that Rajasthan Royals will be returning to the IPL 2018 scene after 2 years will surely put that extra bit of pressure on them to perform well. However, Samson believes that rather than pressure, the squad and the management is excited and happy to be back. The 23-year-old said,

“Rajasthan Royals is known for its excitement, thrill, happiness and its players are known to be helpful to each other and hence I am delighted to be back in the team. There is no pressure kind of thing among players.”

Rajasthan Royals will start their campaign on 9th April against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Before the start of the tournament, the team management will need to make some tough decision regarding their starting XI. Sanju Samson will be competing with English international Jos Buttler for a place in the team. Speaking about the challenges for the upcoming season, Sanju said,

“I strongly believe in giving my best. Butler is a match winner and a fantastic player and I admire him for what he is. Also, I strongly believe in team management and will be happy to do whatever my management wants me to do.”

It’s not only IPL 2018 where Samson is competing with another wicket-keeper batsman, even for the Indian team, the Rajasthan Royals player has to compete with fellow Delhi wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant. When asked about his how he sees his international career at this stage, especially given the presence of Pant on the scene, he said:

“I am concentrating on batting better as a cricketer; I really want to get better at what I am and improve my skills. Selection is not in my hand and hence I have stopped thinking in that direction.”

Pant has played 4 T20I for India, while Sanju Samson has made just 1 international which was against Zimbabwe. With Dhoni in the final few years of his career, BCCI and the selectors will keep their eyes open to find the former Indian captains replacement for the long run and Sanju and Pant are definitely amongst the very best in India currently.
