IPL 2018: Pune to host two playoff matches for Indian Premier League 11

  • MCA requested Indian Premier League Governing Council (GC) to host two of the IPL 2018 playoffs in Pune
  • IPL 2018 GC has reportedly agreed to the suggestion, but will go through the development if the Pune ground is ready by the time IPL 2018 reaches its playoff stage

With the 11th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2018) set to take off on 7th April 2018, the IPL Governing Council (GC) has agreed to a request by the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA), to award two IPL 2018 playoffs games to Pune. These two games consist of the IPL 2018 Eliminator and Qualifier 2.

Pune to get priority as IPL 2018 playoffs venue

IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla said after the IPL Governing Council’s meeting got over on Friday (March 16), that since Rising Pune Supergiant (now defunct IPL franchise) was the runner-up in IPL 2017, it should get first priority for IPL 2018 playoffs, given that the wicket and everything is ready. If not, then Shukla suggested that the GC would go for Kolkata. As reported by Cricbuzz, Rajiv Shukla said,

“For the play-off, there was a suggestion that since Rising Pune Supergiant (which is now defunct) was the runners-up last time, we should give first priority to Pune. If the Pune stadium and the wicket is ready, the first priority would be given to Pune, if not, then we will consider Kolkata for the playoffs.”

The IPL GC also sought a legal opinion on the issue related to the change of Chennai Super Kings’ ownership and its value. Shukla said, “As far as CSK is concerned, we had Justice AP Shah to give his opinion, who was also the Ombudsman in the BCCI, so his opinion has been accepted.”

Earlier in March 2018, the owners of the Delhi Daredevils, GMR group, had sold 50 percent of their stake to the Jindals of the JSW group.

Rajiv Shukla on Mohammed Shami’s IPL 2018 future

Team India pacer and Delhi Daredevils’ IPL 2018 signing, Mohammed Shami, is facing trouble since his estranged wife levelled serious allegations on him pertaining to criminal offences, some of which are non-bailable in nature, if proven true. Rajiv Shukla commented on the issue and said,

“And thirdly as far as Shami is concerned, we’ve decided that we will go by the report of the ACU chief. Whatever his recommendation is, our will be our final decision will be based on that. We’ve nothing to do with anybody’s private life. If Neeraj Kumar’s recommendation gives him a clean chit, then he can play, if he doesn’t, then he won’t. The report will come in next four-five days, so we will wait till it comes.”
