Chennai City coach explains the team’s mindset ahead of Hero Super Cup 2018 clash

Before the Hero Super Cup 2018 qualifier between ATK and Chennai City FC, Mohammed Akbar, the head coach of Chennai City addressed the media in the pre-match press conference and shared how the mindset of the club was prior to the competition.

“It is something that we are looking forward to, to play an ISL side. It would be wrong to contemplate tomorrow’s result from the league’s outcome. Everyone will start from scratch and we have the potential to swing the result in our way. It’s a new challenge and we’re ready for it,” Akbar said, ahead of the Hero Super Cup 2018 qualifier between the two sides.

While Chennai City FC finished eighth in the Hero I-League table this year, two-time ISL champions ATK also endured a horrid season where not only did they fail to defend their title but finished second last in the table. As such, the India Super Cup 2018 is a golden opportunity for both teams to salvage some pride and finish their season on a high.

Akbar also reflected on the poor league outings for both teams and said, as reported by “Tomorrow’s game is a one-off game. You cannot go by what happened in the league, be it the I-League of the ISL. All that matters is what happens tomorrow.”

Former Tottenham and Liverpool striker Robbie Keane was brought in as the marquee player for ATK this season but owing to persistent niggles and injuries, the Irish international wasn’t able to drive his team to a third ISL title. Akbar, though, sounded cautious regarding Keane’s lack of impact and chose to highlight his quality.

“Robbie Keane is a terrific player who can wreak havoc. He might draw two defenders and that might leave open space for others to attack. We have to be on our toes throughout,” he stated.
