During the third minute of the second leg of 2017/18 UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clash against Chelsea, Lionel Messi scored his 99th goal in Europe’s top class competition at the Camp Nou on Wednesday. The fashion in which this happened is noteworthy. Messi slipped a near-post shot between the legs of Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and while scoring his 99th Champions League goal, the Argentine also marked the fastest goal of his career for club and country.
It was finally in the 63rd minute, that Messi recorded his century mark for Champions League goals, which was also scored in a similar fashion as his first, with a ‘nutmeg’ (between the legs) to Courtois.

When Messi scored his 100th Champions League goal, he joined the Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo in the illustrious feat. But while these are the only two players to have achieved such a feat, Lionel Messi has managed 100 Champions League goals in 123 matches, which is 14 less matches than what Cristiano Ronaldo had taken to achieve the feat. Ronaldo, the Portuguese prodigy and Messi’s labelled adversary, had registered 100 Champions League goals in 137 matches.
A closer look at Messi’s figures reveal that the Argentine was also way more economical in achieving the feat of 100 Champions League goals, as the 30-year-old took 1,758 fewe minutes and 266 fewer shots than Ronaldo.
However, Lionel Messi still has work to do if he wants to completely best his counterpart, Ronaldo. The Los Blancos star scorer is currently the Champions League’s all-time leading scorer, with 117 goals to his name currently.
