- Mentor for the Kings XI Punjab, Virender Sehwag, believes the bench strength of the Indian players in KXIP has made them a strong contender to win IPL 2018 title
- Sehwag revealed that spending big on Indian players was their strategy for IPL 2018 auction, and having done that, the team now has a good outlook
Virender Sehwag, mentor for the Kings XI Punjab believes the bench strength of the Indian players have put the KXIP in a strong state to win the IPL 2018 title. Sehwag reckons this is the best KXIP squad in last 10 years and they are best suited to win the competition this season. Sehwag believes spending big on Indian players was their strategy and they were very happy with the players they signed at the IPL 2018 Auction.
KXIP spent a great deal of money on Indian cricketers at the IPL 2018 auction
Kings XI Punjab spent INR 11 crore on KL Rahul, INR 7.6 Cr on Ravi Ashwin, INR 5.6 Cr on Karun Nair, INR 3 Cr on Ankit Rajput, INR 2.2 Cr on Barinder Sran, and INR 1 Cr on Mayank Agarwal which has given them a very strong core of Indian players along with their foreign stars.
Virender Sehwag and Kings XI Punjab’s decision to spend heavy on Indian players has given them a squad full of match winners where Indian players on their own which has not been the case with KXIP in the past where Wriddhiman Saha and Axar Patel were the only Indian players who had done well for the Franchise.
Boasting about KXIP’s chances at the IPL 2018, Virender Sehwag said, as reported by Cricbuzz, “Last few years, our Indian players were not that good except Wriddhiman Saha and Axar Patel,” he added. “That was one gap. If you want to win the IPL, you have to have good Indian players. We have four to five of them this time.”
“We were also struggling with Indian batting line up which could hold the innings together. Guys like Rahul, Nair and Manoj Tiwary can hold the middle-order. We have explosive openers in Gayle and Finch, and down the order we have David Miller. Hopefully, they will do well against spinners.”
Kings XI Punjab have a strong set of foreign players
Apart from the Indian players, KXIP have got the likes of Aaron Finch, AJ Tye, Marcus Stoinis, and Chris Gayle to support their Indian players and push for the IPL title this season. However, Sehwag believes it was Yuvraj Singh and Chris Gayle’s signing at the base price of INR 2 Cr were the biggest steals for KXIp at the IPL auction 2018.
Virender Sehwag said: “It is great that they have come to us at their base price. It is surely a bargain. Who knows if there were more bidders, they could have gone as high as $1 million. They are big names and match winners, even if they win two-three games for us, we would get the return on investment.”
