Indian Premier League (IPL) is by far the most competitive and glamorous T20 league in the world where all the best players from around the world come together for a 2-month long extravaganza. In the past 10 years, Mumbai Indians have won the IPL title most number of times (3) while Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (2) come next in the IPL winners list. With the 11th season of IPL upon us, we take a look at all IPL winners from the previous season. The list of IPL winners tells us how competitive the Indian Premier League (IPL) is as a team like Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are yet to win an IPL title.
Rajasthan Royals won the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League and since then we have seen five different teams lift the trophy and join the list of IPL winners. IPL winners list from the previous seasons gives us an indication how Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore have been unlucky or ineffective in the IPL Finals.
Taking a look at the previous IPL winners list, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have lost 4 IPL finals while Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have been on the losing side in 3 previous IPL finals. On that note, here is a list of IPL winners from the previous seasons from 2008 to 2017.
Rajasthan Royals, IPL winners in 2008, Season 1
The most memorable season of the IPL saw the underdogs Rajasthan Royals lift the first ever IPL trophy and marked their name in the history by being the first ever winner of Indian Premier League. In the final, Rajasthan ousted the Chennai Super Kings by 3 wickets as Shane Warne lifted the first ever IPL trophy.
Deccan Chargers – IPL winners in 2009, Season 2
Although the team is no longer a part of the IPL but the Deccan Chargers created history by becoming the first ever team to win an IPL outside India. Adam Gilchrist led a decorated Deccan side and got the better of Royal Challengers Bangalore despite putting up a small total batting first.
Chennai Super Kings – IPL winners in 2010, Season 3
The era of MS Dhoni and Chennai Super Kings ruling over the IPL began in 2010 with their win in the Season 3 of IPL when they beat Mumbai Indians in the final of IPL 2010. It was the first time CSK won the Premier League and joined the list of IPL winners.
Chennai Super Kings – IPL winners in 2011, Season 4
CSK’s golden run continued with their success in the Indian Premier League as well as Champions Trophy win before the IPl 2011 where they managed to retain their IPL title and became the first ever team to do so. Since then, there has been no IPL side to win 2 back to back IPL titles.
Kolkata Knight Riders – IPL winners in 2012, Season 5
With CSK dominating the IPL, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) under Gautam Gambhir made astute signings and dominated the season 5 of IPL and defeated the Chennai Super Kings who had made their first consecutive IPL final appearances but came up short as KKR won the IPL 2012 final by 5 wickets and joined the elite list of IPL winners.
Mumbai Indians – IPL winners in 2013, Season 6
By far the best performing team in the IPL in recent years have been the Mumbai Indians and they won their first IPL title in the Season 6 of the competition by once again beating the Chennai Super Kings in the final and became the 5th team overall to join the list of IPL winners.
Kolkata Knight Riders – IPL winners in 2014, Season 7
Following their success in the 5th season, KKR were in inspiring form in the 7th season of IPL and led by the mercurial Andre Russell Kolkata won their 2nd IPL title and for a change, it was Kings XI Punjab and not CSK who came up short in the final this time around. KKR may have won the trophy but it was Glenn Maxwell who was named the player of the tournament.
Mumbai Indians – IPL winners in 2015, Season 8
Like KKR, it was now turn for Mumbai Indians to regain their IPL glory after a year’s gap. Mumbai Indians faced IPL’s legacy makers Chennai Super Kings in the final at Eden Gardens and beat the Yellow Brigade by 41 runs with a match-winning innings by their skipper Rohit Sharma.
Sunrisers Hyderabad – IPL winners in 2016, Season 9
IPL 2016 may be remembered as Virat Kohli’s IPL where the Indian skipper smashed 4 centuries but could not take his team to the IPL glory as his team came up short by 8 runs in the final against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Despite being over 110 in first 10 overs, RCB fell short by 8 runs chasing Hyderabad’s total of 208.
Mumbai Indians – IPL winners in 2017, Season 10
After being denied in the 2017, Mumbai Indians were once again ready to add their name to the list of IPL winners and they achieved that feat with a narrow 1-run win over the Rising Pune Supergiants in the final with Krunal Pandya being named as “Man of the Match”.
