The events on a cricket field seldom fail to shock the cricket fans out of their minds, be it due to exuberance or disappointment. The most dreadful of events in the cricket circle, however, are the ones which take place off the cricket field. And controversies like these have caused some star players of leading cricketing nations, to enter the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. We look at five such instances, that could be summed up as some of the most shocking player controversies in cricket, involving; Mohammed Shami, David Warner & Quinton de Kock, Ravichandran Ashwin & Herschelle Gibbs

Five most shocking player controversies in cricket:

1. Mohammed Shami’s wife files police complaint against him for adultery, domestic violence

Team India’s pacer veteran Mohammed Shami, who is touted as a Test-specialist, has very recently landed in a rather tricky situation, one which is although not confirmed yet (as of 10 March, 2018), but poses a threat to the 27-year-old’s cricket career.

India pacer Mohammad Shami has been booked under various non-bailable offences, including attempt to murder, and rape after his wife, Hasin Jahan, lodged a complaint with the Kolkata Police on Friday (9 March). Although Shami has also claimed the allegations to be untrue, the situation is certainly one of the most shocking player controversies in cricket. To read the full story, click here.

2. David Warner & Quinton de Kock’s verbal war during South Africa vs Australia Test series

The four-match Test series kicked off between South Africa and Australia on 1st March, 2018, and as expected of the two teams, there was decent amounts of sledging, verbal wars, and ‘vile comments’. A day before the start of 2nd Test between South Africa and Australia, a video surfaced on Cricket Australia which showed the extent of Australia vice-captain David Warner’s anger, as he seemed curious to go off on South Africa wicketkeeper-batsman, Quinton de Kock. Even after the match got over, Warner went on for 2 or 3 times, looking to pick a fight with Quinton de Kock after the South African wicketkeeper allegedly used inappropriate language against David Warner.

David Warner claimed that De Kock had made a comment about the Aussie veteran’s wife, “that was vile and disgusting”, which was why the cricketer had lost his cool. Although there was no crossing the lines by Warner (thanks to his Australian co-cricketers), the incident has definitely become one of the most shocking player controversies in cricket. 3. Ravichandran Ashwin retaliates with fire to Herschelle Gibbs’ ‘joke’

The verbal war started on Twitter, when India’s spin-bowling legend Ravichandran Ashwin flaunted his new shoes. Expressing his admiration for his new running shoes, the 31-year-old wrote, “Just got my hands on the new NIKE React… the best running shoes I’ve stepped into,”. It was now that the former South Africa batsman Herschelle Gibbs figured that it was a good opportunity to pull India’s leading spinner Ashwin’s leg.

Gibbs told Ashwin, “Hopefully you will be able to run a bit faster now ashwin.” That was enough for Ashwin to take offence of the statement, following which Ashwin retaliated to Gibbs, bringing up the former South African star’s old cricket scandal, which had involved match-fixing. Ashwin shot, “Surely not as fast as you did mate, unfortunately I wasn’t blessed as you were. But I was blessed with a wonderfully ethical mind not to fix games which put food on my plate.”

Although Gibbs didn’t seem to mind the excessively offensive retaliation and chose to move on, following which even Ashwin removed his post, the incident had become one of the most shocking player controversies in cricket, of recent time.
