- Liverpool have the chance to go ahead of Manchester United in the Premier League table should they beat them on Saturday.
Manchester United and Liverpool will renew their age old rivalry when the two sides meet each other at Old Trafford on Saturday (March 10). Ahead of the heated Premier League clash – Manchester United v Liverpool – we look at the best possible combined XI line-up, made up of players from both teams.
Both these great rivals sit inside the top four at this stage of the season, and are probably assured of qualification to next season’s Champions League. However, whoever finishes higher in 2017/18 will certainly have bragging rights in the future.
Each side features a number of talented players, but imagine a world in which the two teams were merged. Which players – if everybody was fit – would make a combined line-up?
Ahead of this highly anticipated fixture, we take a look at the best possible Manchester United v Liverpool Combined XI, based on injury and form factors:
Manchester United v Liverpool Combined XI
GOALKEEPER – David de Gea
One of the simpler choices to make, this one. Let alone the Premier League, David de Gea is perhaps the best goalkeeper plying his trade in the world at present. Despite Loris Karius’ improving form, the Spaniard will rightly take his place in our Manchester United v Liverpool Combined XI.
DEFENDERS – Antonio Valencia, Virgil van Dijk, Eric Bailly, Andy Robertson
Antonio Valencia fends off competition from teenager Trent Alexander-Arnold to find a place in our Manchester United v Liverpool Combined XI, given his more assured defensive abilities. Other than being United’s captain, Valencia is always a threat going forward and has tons of Premier League experience.
Manchester United have been given a timely boost by the return of Eric Bailly at the back who will certainly improve their dodgy looking defense in recent weeks.
Having made a lukewarm start to his Liverpool career, Virgil van Dijk is now looking like the quintessential £75m player who has massively improved the Reds’ struggling back-line. The general consensus is that the Dutchman is the man to lead the Liverpool’s defence for the next few years and he is an automatic pick in this side.
Liverpool’s summer signing Andy Robertson has made the left-back position his own in the absence of Alberto Moreno. Given that his only real competition for the spot is the inconsistent Ashley Young, Robertson is our preferred left-back in this combined lineup.
MIDFIELDERS – Emre Can, Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba
Another complicated selection but on current form, these are the best central midfielders plying their trade in the north of England right now.
Emre Can has been vibrant and effective in Liverpool’s midfield when played in his preferred Number 6 position. The young German is useful at both ends of the pitch – having scored 6 goals and made 5 assists in all competitions this season, while also doing well in terms of tracking back to help the defence out. His stamina is a huge asset to Klopp’s side.
Former Chelsea star Nemanja Matic is a Mourinho favourite and also makes our combined lineup as one of the first picks. The 29-year-old Serbian has the tactical nous, tenacity, good tackling skills and an eye for the pass. To sum it up, Matic possesses every quality that you need from a central midfielder and is one of the best in business at present. He beats Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson for this spot.
The middle-of-the-pitch creative force in this combined XI will come from Paul Pogba, who has the ability to create chances out of nothing and can pull the strings in the middle of the pitch. Despite all his recent criticism and talks of fallout with manager Mourinho, Pogba has still notched up 3 goals and 10 assists in all competitions this season.
FORWARDS – Romelu Lukaku, Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah
Despite copping up constant criticism during his time at the club, Romelu Lukaku has contributed 22 goals and 7 assists for Manchester United in all competitions this season, 13 goals and 6 assists in the Premier League. The Belgian striker walks into our combined lineup ahead of Alexis Sanchez and Sadio Mane.
Roberto Firmino is barely a centre-forward but his numbers this season are better than many prolific strikers. The Brazilian has scored 22 goals and laid out a further 13 assists for Jurgen Klopp’s side in the current campaign. On current form, Firmino is an absolute must pick in this side.
Mohamed Salah – enough said! In a staggering debut campaign for Liverpool, Salah has already recorded a staggering 32 goals in all competitions and with 23 Premier League, is tied as the league’s top scorer with Harry Kane. The magical Egyptian is in the form of his life and will probably walk into any team on this planet right now.
