- Former India captain Kapil Dev has suggested Virat Kohli to play a season of England county cricket
- India are scheduled to play a series against England later this year in England
- Kapil Dev reckons playing in England would help Kohli to be able to score runs in different pitch and ground conditions
- Team India players – Cheteshwar Pujara and Ishant Sharma – are set to play England county cricket in the upcoming season
Former India World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev has advised currently fiery India skipper Virat Kohli to play a season of England county cricket, to further establish himself as the best batsman in the modern cricket world, and also to prepare himself for India’s upcoming series in England.
Playing England county cricket will help Virat Kohli
Despite Virat Kohli’s astonishing numbers in test cricket, he struggled in England when India traveled their last time and could only average 13.40 as compared to his current test average of 53.40. Kapil Dev reckons, a top batsman should be able to score runs in all circumstances and playing in England will enable Kohli to further cement his position as world’s best batsman.
Kapil Dev said: “Practice makes a man perfect. One has to practise those conditions. The bar which we as cricketers set for these people is that you have to be good in all conditions.”
That’s what we used to say about Allan Border or Vivian Richards or Sunil Gavaskar – they were players to play any part, anywhere, any kind of conditions, they used to perform. He (Kohli) has to get runs where it is considered to be the toughest conditions in the world.
“If he can play a season or two in English county cricket there would be nothing wrong because if you want to be the best player in the world you have to get runs everywhere.”
Kapil Dev believes Virat Kohli certainly has the temperament and ability to score run in England or for that matter in any country but having a county season under his belt will only help his batting and India’s chances of winning their first test series in England since 2007.
India have till date won just 2 test series in England (1986 and 2007) and when their tour starts on August 1, we will see Kohli and his team be charged up and eager to win a series away from home after narrowly missing the chance to create history in South Africa.
Cheteshwar Pujara, Ishant Sharma set to play England county cricket
Currently, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ishant Sharma are set to play in England’s county cricket season and a solid performance from them would all but see the duo get an automatic place in India’s 5-match test series against English which commences on August 1.
