IPL 2018: Gautam Gambhir returns to Delhi Daredevils as captain

  • Delhi Daredevils have named Gautam Gambhir as their captain for IPL 2018 season
  • Gautam Gambhir has proven to be a successful captain with KKR in previous Indian Premier League seasons
  • Gambhir was a captain of Delhi Daredevils earlier as well, during the early years of the Indian Premier League
  • The Delhi cricketer was bought by Delhi Daredevils in IPL 2018 auction for INR 2.8 crore

The Delhi Daredevils have named Gautam Gambhir the captain of their franchise for IPL 2018 season, in a bid to rehabilitate their performance in the Indian Premier League. Gambhir, who is based in Delhi, was bought by Delhi Daredevils in IPL 2018 auction for INR 2.8 crore. Now, the former Kolkata Knight Riders‘ captain, under whom KKR had bloomed, will be taking up the responsibility to try and take Delhi Daredevils to their first IPL glory in the upcoming edition of the Indian T20 League, starting from 7 April.

Gautam Gambhir has a rich IPL legacy

Gautam Gambhir was Delhi Daredevils captain previously too, in Indian Premier League 2009, but was bagged by the Kolkata Knight Riders in Indian Premier League 2011. Soon after acquiring the Delhi cricketer, the Kolkata-based team had started dominating the Indian T20 League circuit, reaching three IPL finals and winning two, in a period of 6 years.

On returning to the Delhi Daredevils team, Gambhir said, as reported by ESPN Cricinfo, “I am more excited than I have ever been.”

Gambhir had expressed interest to return to Delhi Daredevils in IPL 2018

Although Gautam Gambhir only played three seasons for Delhi Daredevils, the 36-year-old had seemingly maintained an affinity for the side. Last year, prior to the IPL 2018 auctions taking place, Gautam Gambhir had stated that he was wanting to join Delhi Daredevils in the later part of his Indian Premier League career. He had said in 2017, “I think my heart is still with Delhi.”

“I played for three years for Delhi (Daredevils). Somewhere, deep within my heart, I’d love to finish with Delhi. Though I am the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, and would want them to win it for the third time, but since I’m a Delhi boy too, I obviously want Delhi Daredevils to do well as well.”

With Gautam Gambhir’s experienced captaincy and strong batting style, the Delhi side do have a clear shot at IPL 2018 title. However, it is due to see how the other Indian Premier League franchises shape up before the cricketing extravaganza begins in April, later this year in 2018.
