- McGrath said Virat Kohli could break Sachin Tendulkar’s cricket records
Former Australia speedster Glenn McGrath has spoken about the ever-increasing comparisons between India captain Virat Kohli and India’s greatest cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, touted as the ‘God of Cricket’. McGrath also said that if he was to bowl to Kohli in the current era of cricket, the Australian great would play with the aggressive cricketer’s mindset.
Virat Kohli has been on song for the past cricket season or so, and has been breaking records consistently with his bat, one of the major reasons why he has been drawing parallels with the God of Cricket, Sachin Tendulkar. However, every Indian cricket fan and even international cricket pundits (including Glenn McGrath) are eagerly waiting and speculating on the time, when Kohli will break the greatest cricket record of most ODI centuries, currently held by Sachin Tendulkar.
Glenn McGrath doesn’t like comparing different cricket eras (Virat Kohli – Sachin Tendulkar)
Speaking about the comparisons between Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar, Glenn McGrath told Sportstar,
“I don’t like to compare eras. Every era makes it own demands and the pitches, generally, are better for batting these days. Sachin, on his day, could decimate attacks. Kohli is a very attacking batsman too.”
What if McGrath had to bowl to Virat Kohli?
If we go by the approach and mindset that the current Indian skipper has, one thing is clear that there are very few bowlers that trouble Kohli. However, Glenn McGrath, the Australian pace legend, said that he would have more than a couple plans ready for the aggressive batsman, if he were to bowl to Virat Kohli. To clarify his point further, McGrath said,
“Kohli is a quality batsman, a confidence player, and as a bowler, I would cut off his scoring areas and build pressure. He is good through the off-side, I would block him there. He is good off his legs too and again I would deny him runs in that area.”
Would like to play with Virat Kohli’s mind
McGrath said that while the current cricket era bowlers dreaded Virat Kohli, the Australian legend would play with his mind. And we believe McGrath when he says that, but how is our question. McGrath explained his plans further, and said, as reported by Crictracker,
“Kohli is solid technically, has an aggressive attitude, goes about his cricket with passion and I would like to play on his mind, prevent him from scoring freely.”
“And I would bowl an in-between length at Kohli, neither too full nor too short and cramp him for room.”
“For instance, you could have an aggressive field and bowl a defensive line. There are areas to score but the ball is not there to be hit. It forces mistakes.”
Then there is the classic McGrath ploy, hitting the top of off-stump, a line which is known to be a dominant one in his dismissals in the past.
“The length for this depends from wicket to wicket and from batsman to batsman. When I bowl this line, I would want a full slip cordon. There is nothing worse for a bowler than to see the ball going through an empty area in the cordon.”
On how far Kohli could travel in his extraordinary journey, McGrath answered, “If he continues to bat the way he is doing now, he could well go past Sachin’s records.”
