- Joe Root was ignored by all the teams at the IPL 2018 auction
- Root was hoping to play in the IPL for the first time and work on his T20 skills
- Root will have enough rest ahead of upcoming India’s tour of England
England test captain Joe Root was left disappointed after being snubbed by all the Indian Premier League (IPL 2018) franchise at the recently concluded IPL 2018 Auction. Joe Root had entered the IPL auction as a marquee and was very hopeful of being picked for IPL 2018, however, none of the IPL sides saw Root’s batting style suited to the T20 format and decided not to select him for this year’s competition.
Joe Root expressed his disappointment for not being picked for the IPL 2018 but said that he understands why he was not selected as all the IPL teams have a clear vision of what they want in their squad’s makeup and unfortunately he did not meet those criteria.
Joe Root wanted to play IPL 2018 to gain cricket experience
Joe Root said: “I was disappointed. The reason I wanted to go out there was to play more Twenty20 cricket; it wasn’t to go and earn as much money as possible. I’m not in that position.”
“For me, I wasn’t going to fit into any one of those [IPL] teams. There’s not really much you can do. It was disappointing but it’s also very understandable. Sides have a clear idea of what they want their makeup of their team to look like and they build around that.”
“You’ve just got to get on with the rest of the cricket I can play. It gives me a really good period to make sure everything is set for the start of the Test season back at home but it would have been really nice to have had the experience and everything that the IPL brings to the table.”
Joe Root’s decision to play in the IPL caused a major uproar in the English team management as he was given a rest from the recently concluded T20 tri-series featuring Australia and New Zealand citing his excessive workload in recent months. However, Root ended up watching the entire series from the sidelines where England had a very poor run of results against Aussies and the Kiwis.
Joe Root is now back in England’s ODI team for the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand and claims that he is ready to prepare for the upcoming test series where he will be England’s best batsman and the most important series will be India’s tour where we will see Virat Kohli and Joe Root go head to head to establish themselves as the best batsmen in the modern era.
