We have heard and discussed a lot about how Sourav Ganguly’s tour of Australia back in 1992 could have the been the moment where he made his name for the Indian team but following reports of unprofessional attitude, Ganguly played just 1 game on the tour and was not picked again for the next 4 years. While no one knows what really happened on that tour but Sourav Ganguly did reveal a fascinating story where he received a lashing from Sanjay Manjrekar who was already an established figure in the team at that time.
Manjrekar was fairly consistent until the Australian tour, however, with low scores behind his back Manjrekar was beginning to feel the heat from the younger players on the tour, especially Sourav Ganguly. Although nothing was confirmed by either party, Manjrekar’s concerns were growing after his low scores and emergence of new proteges like Sourav Ganguly.
Sanjay Manjrekar gave a lashing to Sourav Ganguly
It was during the middle of the tour when Manjrekar called Ganguly to his room and gave a long dressing down where Ganguly was asked to work on his attitude and he needed to work on his behaviour around the teammates since he was an international cricketer.
Recalling the incidence in his book “A century is not enough”, Ganguly said: “One day after a side game, he [Manjrekar] called me to his room and gave me a lashing. He told me that I was not behaving properly and that my attitude needed to improve, now that I was an international cricketer. I was completely taken aback and did not respond. After fifteen minutes in his room, I left silently with a dark cloud hanging over my head. What was he talking about? And why?”
Left confused by Manjrekar’s acts, Ganguly was unable to focus on his game and went from a batsman to a net bowler and was overlooked for next 4 years. However, when Dada got his opportunity, he scored a stunning century at Lords on his test debut and left everyone searching for his failure to get a game on the 1992 tour.
Although Ganguly still is unaware about of Manjrekar’s thought-process behind the dressing down that day and Dada has never brought up the issue with Manjrekar and left the issue untouched and closed in that room. Both are part of a successful BCCI commentary panel and the duo get along well despite that one uncomfortable exchange of words between them.
