The inaugural edition of the T20 Mumbai League will be held from 11th March and will conclude on 21st March, with all matches scheduled to be played at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. Probability Sports India Private Limited, organisers of the the ten-day tournament, have also roped in the great Sachin Tendulkar as their brand ambassador. The most interesting factor, however, was that Rohit Sharma was bought for INR 6 lakhs in the T20 Mumbai League’s team – Mumbai North West, at the player auction.
The first edition of the T20 Mumbai League will have six teams from across the city participating vying for the trophy – Mumbai North, Mumbai North-West, Mumbai North-East, Mumbai North-Central, Mumbai South-Central and Mumbai South.The player auction for the league was held on Saturday (March 3), with several big name players from Mumbai going under the hammer.
Rohit Sharma joins Mumbai North West
India’s Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane was signed up by the Mumbai North franchise for INR 7 lakhs. He will also serve as the icon player for the team. Another player who fetched the same price as Rahane was Suryakumar Yadav, who will join the Mumbai North-East team as their icon player.
Four-time IPL winner and India’s stand-in limited overs skipper Rohit Sharma also went under the hammer and was roped in by Mumbai North-West as their icon player for INR 6 lakhs. The gifted right-hander, though, will be leading the national team in Sri Lanka in the T20 tri-series in the absence of regular captain Virat Kohli and is unlikely to play in the event.
Delhi Daredevils and India-batsman Shreyas Iyer was bagged by Mumbai North Central for INR 5 lakhs as their icon player. Veteran all-rounder Abhishek Nayar will link up with the Mumbai South team as their icon player. He fetched INR 4 lakhs at the player auction. Mumbai’s reliable middle-order batsman Siddhesh Lad went to Mumbai South Central for INR 4 lakhs as their icon player.
Prithvi Shaw, who recently led the Indian colts to the U-19 World Cup triumph for a record fourth time, was snapped up by Mumbai North for INR 2.80 lakhs, while former India pacer Dhawal Kulkarni was signed up by Mumbai North East for INR 1.50 lakhs.
The T20 Mumbai League will also have some prominent former players taking up the coaching and mentoring roles with the six franchises, including the likes of Vinod Kambli, Lalchand Rajput, Sandeep Patil, Balwinder Sandhu, Amol Muzumdar and Sameer Dighe.
