2018 Nidahas Trophy: Shakib Al Hasan ruled out, Mahmudullah named Bangladesh skipper

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan was struggling with a finger injury in the run up to the 2018 Nidahas Trophy, and now has been ruled out of the upcoming T20 Tri-Series in Sri Lanka, the Bangladesh Cricket Board confirmed on Saturday. The 2018 Nidahas Trophy T20I Tri-Series involving; hosts Sri Lanka, along with India and Bangladesh, is scheduled to start on Tuesday i.e. 6 March.

Shakib Al Hasan picked up the finger injury during the final of a tri-nation ODI competition against Sri Lanka in Dhaka earlier this year in January. Owing to the injury, the former ODI and current T20I and Test captain of the Bangladesh cricket team, missed the subsequent two-match Test series, and both T20Is against Sri Lanka in February.

Shakib Al Hasan was on Bangladesh roster for 2018 Nidahas Trophy

The Bangladesh squad for the 2018 Nidahas Trophy T20I Tri-Series included Shakib Al Hasan, as it was being hoped that the all-rounder would recover at some stage of the tournament.

It was reported that the national cricket board (BCB) had sent Shakib Al Hasan to Thailand last week, for an expert opinion on the captain’s injury, which suggested that Shakib be given more time to heal completely from the ailment.

Give the world-class player time to get fit

As reported by the Deccan Chronicle, interim Bangladesh coach Courtney Walsh said that Shakib Al Hasan better not be rushed back on the cricket field. Walsh said at the time of Bangladesh cricket team’s departure ahead of the 2018 Nidahas Trophy T20 Tri-Series,

“We will give him (Shakib Al Hasan) the time, as long as he takes to get ready.”

“Guys have to understand and work around that. When you have a world-class player like Shakib, you give him every opportunity to get fit. He is a hard player to replace overnight. He does everything – bat, bowl, field and captain. As soon as he is well enough to play, we will have to get him there.”

Now with the reports confirming that Shakib Al Hasan will be rested for the T20 Tri-Series, the captaincy of the Bangladesh cricket team will be taken up by vice-captain Mahmudullah Riyad, while Liton Das will replace Shakib in the batting department.
