Former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori will take over the coaching reigns of Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) side Rajshahi Kings for the next two editions of the tournament. Vettori’s appointment was confirmed by Rajshahi Kings CEO Tahmeed Huq on Thursday (March 1).
Daniel Vettori: Globetrotting T20 coach
While this will be the first time that Daniel Vettori will be working in Bangladesh Premier League, the former left-arm spinner comes in with plenty of previous experience of coaching domestic T20 sides. Daniel Vettori also serves as the head coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore in Indian Premier League (IPL), Brisbane Heat in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) and Middlesex county in England’s Natwest T20 Blast.
As reported by ESPN Cricinfo, Rajshahi Kings CEO Tahmeed Huq welcomed Daniel Vettori and said,
“We are delighted to appoint Vettori as our head coach considering his vast experience both as a player and later as a coach.”
“With his experience as a specialist coach in the T20 format, Daniel will not only help the team but the local youngsters to learn and excel in this very exciting format. We are confident his arrival will help our team a lot considering he can guide our cricketers to the desired destination. I am sure they will have the opportunity to learn a lot from him,” he added.
Vettori brings immense hopes for Rajshahi Kings
Rajshahi Kings will be hoping that Daniel Vettori’s expertise can lift the fortunes of a side that is yet to win a BPL title. While they finished second best in the 2016 BPL edition, they had a disappointing 2017 BPL season as the Rajshahi Kings ended up as the second team from the bottom with only four wins in 12 BPL games.
