BBL 07: Ricky Ponting names D’Arcy Short best player of Big Bash League

Former Australian captain and the current T20 coach for the Aussies team Ricky Ponting has picked the explosive opener D’Arcy Short as his best player from the Big Bash League 2017. Short had an amazing BBL 07 where he scored 572 runs with 4 half-centuries and a century to his name. Short’s 572 runs in the BBL 07 came at a strike rate of over 150 which was another reason for Ponting’s decision to pick Short as the best player from BBL 07.

D’Arcy Short’s impressive BBL campaign saw him make his debut for the Australian side and impressed in the T20I tri-series against England and New Zealand. Short led the Australian side to a successful tri-series win and having worked with the opener on the series, Ponting believes Short is developing into an even better batsman and we are yet to see the best of him.

Ponting said: “Unashamedly I am going with Hobart Hurricanes player D’Arcy Short as my best player from last season as he had an unbelievable BBL 07, broke all sorts of records scoring 572 runs and striking at almost 150. He is still a young boy and it was amazing to see consistent match-winning performances from him”

Another aspect Ponting touched on was Short’s ability to tackle spin bowling in recent months. Having worked closely with Short in the Australian setup, Ponting believes that was one aspect which Short has worked very hard on and it was not a surprise to see him thrash the quality spinners all over the park in the BBL 07.

Ponting missed out on Short at the IPL Auction

Ricky Ponting was a constant figure in the media coverage of the BBL 07 and he followed Short’s development throughout the competition and wanted to sign him for Delhi Daredevils for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Ponting is the head coach of Delhi’s franchise and kept pushing to sign Short at the IPL auction after several teams were in the run-in to sign the Aussies opener. However, it was Rajasthan Royal who won the bidding war and will have the luxury of playing D’Arcy Short at the IPL 2018.
