The 2018 FIFA World Cup is just under 100 days away now and the world is waiting with baited breath for Russia and Saudi Arabia to take the field on 14th June at the Luzhniki Stadium. The World Cup brings together the greatest footballer’s from across the globe to showcase their skills and talent and entertain billions of spectators in every corner of the world. Prior to the World Cup, we take a look at 5 players who will be competing for the Golden Boot in Russia, featuring Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar and more.
5 players who will be competing for the Golden Boot in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia:
1. Lionel Messi
Probably the best player on the planet right now, Lionel Messi is in terrifying form for his club FC Barcelona and he will be looking to become the first player to bag consecutive Golden Boot after winning his first in Brazil. The Argentine international has won every trophy there is to win at the club level but to truly write his name in the history books, one feels that the little magician will need to win that 2018 FIFA World Cup Trophy.
Messi came agonisingly close to fulfilling his dream last time out when Argentina reached the Final in Brazil only to lose to a well drilled German team in the dying minutes of extra-time. The 30-year-old is currently the leading goal-scorer in La Liga and is looking good to win his 6th Ballon D’or at the end of this year.
2. Cristiano Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo had done everything one could have imagined at the club level but in the summer of 2016, Portugal captain drove his team to a European Championship win and gave his country a major title to celebrate, something Lionel Messi has failed to do in all these years. The 33-year-old started off 2017/2018 season slowly but soon after the winter break picked up the pace and is now scoring goals for fun.
Ronaldo is the leading goal-scorer in the Champions League this season and will be among the front-runners to win the Golden Boot award. This will in all likelihood be Portuguese star’s final FIFA World Cup.
2014 World Cup ended in the most devasting and damaging way for Neymar and the Brazil team. No one felt more pressure than Neymar during that one month as millions expected the then Barcelona star to drive his country to ultimate glory. However, the Brazilians World Cup was cut short as he suffered a devasting injury in the quarter-final forcing him to watch Germany’s 7-1 thrashing of Brazil in the semi-final from the stands.
Neymar will return to the 2018 FIFA World Cup this summer fitter, faster and stronger and there is no doubt that he will be on the scoresheet more often than not. However, his challenge will come when adjusting to the other superstars that are present in the Brazilian squad and building a team understanding before the big kick-off.
4. Harry Kane
Arguably the best striker in the world right, Kane is on course to win 3 consecutive EPL Golden Boot award at the end of this season. If England are to have any hopes of going all the way this summer, they will need to heavily rely on Harry Kane to find the back of the net for them.
The 24-year-old is not only a prolific finisher but has an excellent to bring his other teammates into play and hold up the ball to allow space and time to his wingers. Kane might just enter the 2018 FIFA World Cup as the favourite to win the Golden Boot award but he will need massive help from his English team-mates.
5. Antoine Griezmann
Griezmann will have some of the worlds best footballers in the French national team and they will enter the tournament as the favourites. However, in order to do well they will need the Atletico Madrid striker to be in top form in from the goal.
