The third season of the Pakistan Super League kicked off on Thursday (22nd Feb), and it took only one match and a day for the PSL 2018 to hit the news. In the second clash of PSL 2018 – Karachi Kings vs Quetta Gladiators – Shahid Afridi grabbed all headlines after he took an unbelievably smooth catch over the boundary line to dismiss Quetta’s Umar Amin on 31. When cricketers think it better to retire from competitive cricket, Afridi is rocking it with his excellence. The cricket veteran doesn’t seem to age, does he?
Shahid Afridi proves that ‘catches win matches’
In the sport of cricket, there is an old phrase, ‘catches win matches’. That is exactly what the former Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi did on Friday in the very second fixture of the Pakistan Super League (PSL 2018) match, as Karachi Kings defeated Quetta Gladiators by 19 runs, restricting them to 130/9 in 20 overs while chasing 150. It was also Karachi Kings’ first-ever win against Quetta Gladiators’ in Pakistan Super League history.
Quetta Gladiators’s batsman Umar Amin was batting in the 13th over, when he pulled off Mohammad Irfan straight up for a probable sixer. It would have been a six had Shahid Afridi not reached under it. The 37-year-old Karachi Kings’ star player kept running to place himself under the ball till the last moment, gripped the ball in his hands as it flew over the boundary line, started to fumble and fall to the other side, threw the ball back up, regained his balance, came back to clinch the ball with style, and Umar Amin (31) is out.
It was almost beautiful how both, the cricket fans, and Umar Amin were floored in disbelief.
The catch was impressive in all ways that could be. It demanded athleticism from Shahid Afridi, required agility, great balance and an even greater presence of mind. After completing the seemingly impossible catch, Shahid Afridi stood their in style as the Karachi Kings and Afridi fans cheered on. The man is a class act, Shahid Afridi.
