Indian Premier League (IPL) has given us some of the best T20 matches of all-time where the excitement stretched to the very last ball and the game is often placed on a knife-edge. Run chases in the IPL are always exciting as every IPL side has a strong batting lineup which is capable of chasing down any total. On that note, we look at 5 biggest run chases in the Indian Premier League history, featuring Kings XI Punjab.
In any form of T20 cricket, any chase over 190 is a commendable feat, as it requires teams to score at a set tempo for the entire 20 overs and they cannot afford to let wickets hamper their run scoring. Now sit back, and revisit some of the biggest run chases in IPL.
5 biggest run chases in Indian Premier League:
1). 217/7 (Rajasthan vs Deccan Chargers, 2008)
The biggest run chase in Indian Premier League history came in the very first season of the competition back in 2008 when Rajasthan Royals chased down a mammoth score of 217 against the now defunct IPL franchise Deccan Chargers.
Deccan posted 214 runs in the first innings courtesy a stunning century from Andrew Symonds which went in vain as Rajasthan Royals sparked to a flying start courtesy the South African Graeme Smith.
Yusuf Pathan continued the momentum with a brisk 28-ball inning of 61 and it was Shane Warne who scored 22 runs from 9 balls and struck a six in the final over to win the match for Rajasthan Royals and record the biggest run chase in IPL history.
2). 214/3 (Delhi Daredevils vs Gujarat Lions, 2017)
One of the most recent run chases which left everyone inside Feroz Shah Kotla and million others watching at home jaw dropped when Delhi Daredevils and Rishabh Pant decided to chase down the total of 208 set by Gujarat Lions.
Such was Pant’s brilliance that Delhi managed to get home in just 17.3 overs with Pant smashing 97 runs off just 43 deliveries with 6 fours and 9 sixes to record the second biggest run chase in Indian Premier League’s history.
3). 211/4 (Kings XI Punjab vs Surisers, 2014)
It is hardly a surprise to see Kings Punjab find a place in one of IPL’s biggest run chases as Glenn Maxwell and David Miller were the powerhouse for them back in the year 2014. Chasing Hyderabad’s total of 205, Kings XI saw Maxwell blaze to a 23-ball knock of 44 and Indian test wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha scored 54 runs from just 26 deliveries.
Kings XI Punjab chased down the total from just 18.4 overs and recorded the 3rd biggest run chase in IPL history till date.
4). 208/5 (Chennai Super Kings vs RCB, 2012)
Any record for the most successful run-chases in IPL history will be incomplete without some magic from MS Dhoni and Chennai Super Kings. RCB were 162/2 after 16 overs but failed to capitalize on their good start and could only score 205 runs from 20 overs.
RCB’s slow finish to the innings, Chennai saw Faf Du Plessis give CSK a brisk start with 46-ball knock of 71 and then it was MS Dhoni striking 41 runs from 24 balls to take Chennai home and record the 4th biggest IPL run chase till date.
5). 206/4 (Kings XI Punjab vs CSK, 2014)
Once again, we see Kings XI Punjab in the list of biggest successful run chases in IPL cricket and once again it was Glenn Maxwell at the heart of their run chase. Maxi struck a 43-ball knock of 95 with 15 fours and 2 sixes and despite winning the match, many were heartbroken for Maxwell who missed out on his century.
The icing on Kings XI Punjab’s win came with David Miller’s brisk end of 37-ball innings of 54 striking 3 fours and 3 sixes. These were the 5 most successful run-chases in IPL history, let us know your favorite run chase from the Indian Premier League.
