Ravi Ashwin and Herschelle Gibbs engage in verbal war on Twitter

India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and former South Africa batsman Herschelle Gibbs very recently got involved in a verbal war on Twitter spat Monday (19 February). Stating about a new pair of shoes from a leading brand, Ashwin wrote on his Twitter that it was the best pair of shoes the veteran had put his feet into. Gibbs replied in a taunt, saying that hopefully the Indian spinner would now be able to run faster, and it gave way to a verbal spat.

While Ashwin was busy boasting about his new pair of shoes, Herschelle Gibbs felt that maybe it was a chance for him to take a jibe at the Indian spin bowling veteran. When Ashwin realised that Gibbs was taking a dig at him, the 31-year-old tried to hit back, and even did so successfully. However, the back and forth escalated the apparent ‘jokes’, and now the duo are in news.

Here is how Ashwin and Herschelle Gibbs’ spat went down

Ravichandran Ashwin wrote on his Twitter handle, “Hey Guys! Just got my hands on the new NIKE React. It’s got a stunning design and the foam technology used makes it light and comfortable to use. Undoubtedly, the best running shoes I’ve stepped into, can’t wait to flaunt them.”

Herschelle Gibbs was feeling a little poky, when he said, “Hopefully you will be able to run a bit faster now ashwin.”

It was now that Ashwin thought of hitting back at Gibbs and quiet him down for once and all. Ashwin took a dig at Gibbs and brought up the South Africa cricketer’s alleged involvement in the 2000 match-fixing scandal, along with Hansie Cronje, Nicky Boje, among others.

Ravichandran Ashwin wrote, “Surely not as fast as you did mate, unfortunately I wasn’t blessed as you were. But I was blessed with a wonderfully ethical mind not to fix games which put food on my plate.”

What scandal?

In 2006, the South African batsman Herschelle Gibbs had accepted that he was offered money to underperform in exchange for money in 2000. The offer was relayed to him by Cronje, who was subsequently banned from cricket for life.

Herschelle Gibbs was quick to sense that the joke did not go well with Ashwin, and took up a pacifist approach this time, choosing not to retaliate. Gibbs wrote, “Can’t take a joke i see, anyway moving swiftly on.”

Replying to Herschelle Gibbs’ statement, the Indian spin-specialist assured the South African that his reaction should not be mistaken for offensive, as he was too, only ‘joking’. Ashwin wrote, “I totally believed my reply was a joke too, but look how people and yourself perceived it. I am totally game for this sort of fun mate, we shall dine over this sometime.”

And that was it from Herschelle Gibbs, who chose not to escalate it further, as it would have given him a bad name. However, Ravichandran added further and clarified that all was done in good humour, and also joked that he had pulled down the apparently ‘offensive reply’ to prevent his ‘haters’ from getting entertained.
