IPL 2018: Top 5 highest wicket takers in Indian Premier League history

Indian Premier League and T20 Cricket saw their inception within a span of 12 months where everyone was contemplating how role of the bowlers will evolve in the game and how important will they be for their teams in the shortest form of the game.

As it turned out, bowlers have evolved their game since IPL started as we have seen spinners and fast bowlers who can vary their pace being the most successful bowlers in the IPL cricket. Today we take a look at the highest wicket-takers in IPL cricket which sees Lasith Malinga lead the chart who unfortunately will not be part of IPL this season.

Top 5 wicket-takers in IPL

1). Lasith Malinga (Mumbai Indians)

Arguably the greatest bowler to have played in the Indian Premier League is Sri Lankan Lasith Malinga who was known to bowl deadly yorkers and loopy bouncers for Mumbai Indians.

Malinga was Mumbai’s biggest weapon in the death overs and had often restricted the opposition by picking crucial wickets at the end. Malinga had picked 154 wickets in 110 IPL matches at an average of 19 and a healthy strike rate of 16.6. Despite bowling in the powerplay and slog overs, Malinga’s IPL economy stood at a healthy 6.86 RPO.

2). Amit Mishra (Deccan Chargers, Delhi Daredevils, Sunrisers Hyderabad)

In an era where Harbhajan Singh and Ravi Ashwin dominated the spin bowling in India, Amit Mishra always managed to chip in with wickets especially in the IPL cricket.

Having represented 3 IPL sides over the years, Amit Mishra managed to pick 134 wickets in 126 matches including 3 hat tricks. Mishra’s leg-spin is never easy to get away with and batsmen have often lost their wicket trying to accelerate against him in the middle and death overs.

3). Harbhajan Singh (Mumbai Indians)

Harbhajan Singh will play for an IPL side other than Mumbai Indians for the first time in 2018 when he will dawn the yellow of Chennai Super Kings. Previously. Bhajji picked 127 wickets for Mumbai Indians in 136 matches at an outstanding economy rate of 6.97.

These numbers were enough for Mumbai to retain the turbanator as Chennai Super Kings swopped in with an INR 2 Cr bid and signed him as a replacement for Ravi Ashwin who will play for KXIP this year.

4). Piyush Chawla (Kings XI Punjab, Kolkata Knight Riders)

Yet another spinner in the list of top 5 most wicket takers in IPL cricket as Piyush Chawla finds himself at the 4th position with 126 wickets to his name. Chawla’s biggest asset is his easy action which prompts the batsmen to come after him and attack him.

Although Chawla’s economy rate is on the higher side, the crafty leg-spinner rarely goes without a wicket in his quota of 4 overs. That was the biggest reason why Kolkata Knight Riders decided to use their Right to Match option in keeping hold of Piyush Chawla for IPL 2018.

5). Dwayne Bravo (Chennai Super Kings, Gujarat Lions, Mumbai Indians)

Wrapping up the list of our top-5 highest wicket-taker in IPL cricket is the versatile Dwyane Bravo who has picked 122 wickets in just 106 IPL games. Over the years Bravo has gone from being a medium fast bowler to an exception T20 bowler who has at least 3-4 type of balls up his sleeve in the slog overs.

His loopy bouncers, unplayable yorkers and at times slower than the usual slower balls are almost impossible hit which has always put Bravo amongst the top wicket taker in every IPL season. Bravo will be playing for Chennai Super Kings in IPl 2018 and we can expect the same from the West Indian star.
