IPL 2018: Four overseas players Delhi Daredevils should play

Delhi Daredevils have been the Indian Premier League’s perennial underachievers over the last decade. Other than a couple of top four finishes in between, the team from Delhi has been the punching bag for almost every other IPL team and despite their owners’ best efforts at every auction, the on-field performances have remained the same and have largely resulted in disappointment for the fans.

Given the gleam backdrop, it was only natural that the Delhi Daredevils thinktank recruited a world-class head coach in the form of Ricky Ponting ahead of the mega auction and chalked out a rather sensible player recruitment strategy which seems to have worked as well.

Delhi Daredevils were off to a good start when they announced their retention list – including Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer and South African all-rounder Chris Morris. They also managed to make some extremely shrewd signings at the auction and roped in quality foreign T20 stars like Glenn Maxwell, Colin Munro, Daniel Christian, Jason Roy, Trent Boult and Kagiso Rabada to shape their squad for the upcoming IPL season.

Here, we list down four overseas players that the Delhi-based franchise might include in their starting lineup at the beginning of the tournament in April.

1. Colin Munro

It is for a reason that New Zealand’s Colin Munro is the currently the world’s 4th highest ranked T20 batsman in the world. The Kiwi dasher has possesses loads of ability, a glimpse of which was on display in the IPL last year when he played for the Kolkata Knight Riders. On the flat Indian pitches, Munro can have a go at the bowlers from the word go and set the tournament alight with his stroke play if he plays to potential for the Daredevils. At INR 1.9 crores, Munro was certainly one of the top bargain buys of the auction in Bangalore.

Possible Alternative – Jason Roy

2. Glenn Maxwell

Like Munro, Australia’s Glenn Maxwell is also a bit of a maverick and has the rare ability of changing the course of a game in a matter of overs, if not balls. Maxwell was instrumental in Kings XI Punjab’s run to the IPL final in the 2014 edition and lit up the league with his six-hitting prowess. Maxwell is now back at the franchise where he started his IPL journey, with the Delhi Daredevils shelling out a whopping INR 9 crores to secure his services. There will be no stopping Delhi this year if the ‘Big Show’ is in the mood.

Possible Alternative – Daniel Christian

3. Chris Morris

All-rounder Chris Morris was one of the three players retained by the Delhi Daredevils ahead of the mega auction and the big South African will in all likelihood be the the man tasked with bowling his quota of 4 overs and coming in late to finish off the innings for the Daredevils in the upcoming season. As was evident last year, Morris certainly has the traits to succeed in the above-mentioned role and provide much needed flexibility to the revamped Delhi outfit under Gautam Gambhir in IPL 11.

Possible Alternative – Daniel Christian

4. Kagiso Rabada

Given the fact that the Daredevils used one of their ‘Right to Match’ cards to bring back Kagiso Rabada into their setup at the auction says a lot about the young fast bowler who was recently ranked as the world’s top ranked fast bowler in the Test format. At 22 years of age, Rabada is already the undisputed leader of the Proteas bowling attack in every format and he will be asked to shoulder a similar responsibility for Delhi Daredevils in the IPL this season. Bought for INR 4.2 crores, the lanky fast bowler has every attribute to rattle any batting unit with sheer pace and lead Delhi’s revival.

Possible Alternative – Trent Boult
