Virat Kohli is a better captain than Sourav Ganguly: Virender Sehwag

Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag rarely minces his words and believes in putting forward his honest opinion most of the times. Following India’s historic and a rather convincing 5-1 ODI series win, Sehwag claimed that Virat Kohli is an upgrade to Sourav Ganguly’s skills as the Indian captain.

Indian team had prospered under Sourav Ganguly

Virender Sehwag and many of the modern great players of Indian cricket (Yuvraj, Harbhajan, Laxman, Zaheer, Gambhir) made their mark when Sourav Ganguly was the captain. Recalling the time under Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag highlighted the aggression which saw India win matches and series away from home.

Virender Sehwag believes Virat Kohli has taken on the mantle, and is on course to better all records held by the previous Indian captains. Virat Kohli has captained India in 49 ODI matches so far, winning 38 of them and has a win percentage of 77%, which is unheard of from the previous Indian captains.

It was Kohli’s aggressive captaincy and unreal batting skills which saw India beat South Africa for the very first time in a bilateral ODI series on their own soil. Having got the captaincy in 2013, Kohli has become more ruthless as a batsman which has massively helped his and Team India’s cause.

Captain Virat Kohli one of the best, says Sehwag

Speaking with India TV, Virender Sehwag spoke about Virat Kohli and said,

“He (Virat Kohli) has gained confidence with the captaincy. Unlike others, he has matured and has taken his individual game to the next level. He doesn’t take the pressure of captaincy. In fact, he has improved his game with the responsibility. He has brought the trend of fitness in the camp.”

“Kohli is the No.1 captain in terms of series wins. If we analyse the past eight series wins under his captaincy, we’ll find that he is one of the best captains we have ever seen. Having said that, I believe that we should not compare him with the best of previous captains. He needs more time and experience as captain to reach where the past skippers are.”

Having praised Virat Kohli’s abilities as India’s finest batsman and one of the great captains, Sehwag has requested the media and younger generation of fans to not compare Kohli with the former Indian players to ease the burden of performance on Kohli and team who look set to conquer the world cricket in coming years.
