Manchester United superstar Paul Pogba and manager Jose Mourinho have been at war about the midfielder’s best position in the side which has seen the French midfielder fail to complete 90 minutes in each of his last 3 appearances. According to reports, Pogba is unhappy and is regretting his decision to join Man United last season.
Pogba had options to join Real Madrid, Barcelona
Pogba had the option of signing for the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona but chose his former club Manchester United as his next destination after deciding to quit Juventus. Pogba’s playing style has always been a debate among the United fans as he loves to venture forward and has enough skills to floor the oppositions.
Mid-field problematic for Pogba and Mourinho
However, Pogba’s forward-thinking play takes a toll of United’s tactics because to get the best out of the footballer, Mourinho has to use him in a 3-man midfield which is an issue at the moment with Michael Carrick, Ander Herrera, and Marouane Fellaini all struggling with injuries.
It has virtually forced Pogba to play in a 2-man midfield alongside Matic and results have been very poor. The 24-year-old is often left wondering in the opposition’s box which allows the other teams to hit Manchester United on a counter attack. Pogba was at fault for Newcastle’s goal which saw United lose another away game and put their aspirations of a top-4 finish under serious threat.
Pogba was taken off immediately after Newcastle scored and suggestions have been made about a possible bust-up between the manager and his star signing. Following the Newcastle defeat, Mourinho said, as reported by Daily Record,
“I remember clearly without television, just with my memory from the touchline. I remember clearly a Newcastle player jumping and two of my players looking at him and staying on the floor.”
Since then, Mourinho has been rather vocal about Pogba’s best position and contribution to the team’s tactical play. Pogba has been labeled as a box-to-box player which often demands him to get the protection which Mourinho is denying him at the moment.
Mourinho on Manchester United’s box-to-box tactics
Mourinho said, “In relation to his best position I had a few laughing over the past week because I heard, I watched, I had a chance to read a few things and I got a bit confused. For me box-to-box means box-to-box. And means you have to be good in this box, you have to be good in this road, and you have to be good in that box.”
“Means that you have to defend well in this box, you must have the physical condition, the desire, the intensity, the stamina to go until the other box. In the other box you have to be good at scoring, creating, heading and so on. And then when your team loses the ball, you have to go to the other box because I think this is the meaning of the ‘box-to-box.”
While Mourinho may argue his case and demand the best out of Pogba under every circumstance but players like Pogba who can turn the game in an instance and can win matches on his own deserve a but of more support from their team and especially the manager.
Man United fans must hope that Mourinho finds a quick solution to this recent chaos at the club and bring his team back to winning ways as their FA Cup and Champions League campaign gets into the business end.
