5 India captains to win an ODI series outside Asia, ft. MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli

Team India have never been the best travelers and over the years have terrible ODI records outside Indian subcontinents. Despite dominating all the oppositions at home under MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, India’s ODI record away from home is not the greatest. There have been very few India captains who have managed to win an ODI series away from Asian conditions, and today we look at top 5 ODI wins which were bagged by India captains outside Asia.

5). Mohd Azharuddin (In England, 1990)

One of India’s rare ODI series win away from India in the in the early 90’s came against England on their own turf. Playing a 2-match ODI series, India won both the matches by 6 wickets and 5 wickets respectively. Skipper Mohd Azharuddin scored crucial half-centuries in both the matches.

4). Virat Kohli* (In South Africa, 2017)

Perhaps a bit early to say but Virat Kohli and his team have done enough to earn the right to win the ongoing 2017-18 ODI series vs South Africa. Having won the first 3 ODI matches, South Africa have all but lost the series and it was Captain Kohli who led the way with 2 centuries and 2 half centuries in first 4 ODI matches.

3). Sourav Ganguly (In England, 2002)

Perhaps the greatest moment for Indian cricket in the early 2000’s saw Sourav Ganguly smash England’s opening bowlers to all corners chasing the total of 325 and when Mohd Kaif and Zaheer Khan stole the final runs to lift the Natwest Trophy and there was Indian skipper removing his shirt and swinging it with pride and joy on the Lords balcony. That moment saw the new found aggression and ruthlessness in the Indian side especially playing away from home.

2). Sunil Gavaskar (World Championship, 1985)

Coming into the World Championship 1985, India were the reigning World Champions and like their World Cup campaign in England, India were not given slightest of chances of winning the competition. However, Sunil Gavaskar led a young and energetic side to the final where they beat Pakistan by 8 wickets where Ravi Shastri, K Srikanth and L Sivaramakrishna, along with Kapil Dev, played a huge role in India’s World Championship success.

1). MS Dhoni (Tri-series in West Indies and Australia)

Like Ganguly’s young team got a huge lift with their win in the tri-series against England same happened with MD Dhoni’s team when they beat Australia and Sri Lanka to win the tri-series final in 2008. India faced Australia in the best of 3 finals and beat them 2-0.

As for Dhoni’s ability to lead from the front, Dhoni played a crucial innings in the final of another tri-series final in West Indies featuring Sri Lanka and West Indies. Chasing a score of 203, India were down to 182/9 with only Ishant Sharma left to partner MS Dhoni.

Dhoni held his nerve and scored 16 runs in the final over to win the series for India. Dhoni remained unbeaten at 45 and took the men in blue to yet another ODI series win outside Indian subcontinents.
