2017/18 UEFA Champions League Round of 16: 5 teams with most UCL titles

The much-awaited Round of 16 of the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League is due to start from the night of 13th February, and it will be the return of intense footballing action between top European clubs (Real Madrid, AC Milan, Barcelona, etc.) as they fight it out to be the best and clinch that revered UCL title. We look at teams who have won the most number of Champions League titles.

UEFA Champions League is the pinnacle for every top European club as it is the success parameter for them that defines their progression and pedigree among the elites of European football. Over the years, we have seen teams from Spain and England be the dominant factors in the Champions League but the balance of power has always shifted across the countries.

Real Madrid raced ahead with 5 consecutive European Cup titles (now known as Champions League) and famously completed their La Decima (10 UCL titles) with a win over Atletico Madrid in the year 2014. So which team has won the most number of Champions League titles?

1). Real Madrid (12 Champions League Titles)

As stated, Real Madrid have been the dominant side in Champions League as they have won 12 European titles. Back when the competition started, Real Madrid were the dominant side of European football and they made their advantage count and won 5 back to back titles between 1956-60. Then came the lull of 32 years which separated their 6th and 7th European trophy. Los Blancos have once again proved themselves as the powerhouse of European football winning the Champions League titles in 2014, 2016, and 2017.

2). AC Milan (7 Champions League Titles)

Perhaps the romantic club of Champions League, AC Milan are second on the list of most Champions League titles with 7 winner medals to their name. AC Milan have won the Champions League titles in 1963, 1969, 1989, 1990, 1994, 2003, 2007 and played one of the most memorable finals when they let a 3-0 half time lead slip away against Liverpool in the 2005 final at Istanbul.

3). Bayern Munich (5 Champions League Titles)

While Real Madrid dominated the early years of Champions League, Bayern Munich took the mantle and have been one of the most successful teams in modern Champions League history. Bayern’s Champions League success has come in 1974, 1975, 1976, 2001, and 2013 but the German club must rue those 2 minutes against Manchester United in the 1999 Champions League final where they lost to 2 injury time goals from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunner Solskjaer.

4). Barcelona (5 Champions League Titles)

If Bayern Munich have been well known for their success in the modern era, Barcelona have certainly been the best team of the 21st century in the Champions League. Barcelona’s Champions League titles came in the years 1992, 2006, 2009, 2011, and 2015 and the Catalan team have been severe on Premier League sides beating Arsenal and Manchester United in their 3 Champions League finals.

5). Liverpool (5 Champions League Titles)

Liverpool’s last Champions league success came in the year 2005 where they beat AC Milan after going behind 3-0 at halftime, however, Liverpool’s rich history has seen them win 5 Champions League titles in the years 1977, 1978, 1981, 1984, and 2005. The Reds are hoping to establish themselves as the European powerhouse under Jurgen Klopp’s management.
