Sri Lanka Cricket announces Lankan Premier League, their very own T20 league

Sri Lanka cricket (SLC) is ready to follow the footsteps of it’s neighbours, as after India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, the island country is now set to set in motion their very own T20 league, which will be called the ‘Lankan Premier League’. Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed the news on their Twitter account on Thursday. It is the advent of a brand new domestic T20 league, in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka Cricket announce Lankan Premier League

Sri Lanka Cricket posted on their Twitter today (8 February), “Nidahas Trophy President SLC Thilanga Sumathipala says a T20 league titled ‘Lankan Premier League’ will be launched very soon.”

Sri Lanka Cricket had proposed their own T20 cricket competition in 2011, which was called the Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL). The 2011 season of the proposed T20 premier league, however, was postponed, and it’s first season was held in 2012. Later, the subsequent 2013 and 2014 seasons were cancelled due to organisational and sponsorship issues.

The recently proposed ‘Lankan Premier League’ has come in the backdrop of the previous Sri Lanka cricket plans to initiate a T20 Premier League, as the national cricket authority announced that it had overcome the financial lags that it was facing earlier.

Nidahas Trophy 2018 has been revamped

The 2018 Nidahas Trophy is an upcoming cricket tournament, which is scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka in March 2018. It is a tri-nation series between Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka.

The concept of the ‘Lankan Premier League’ has been streamlined as SLC has now reformed their cricketing affairs, creating tie-ups with media partners from India and Bangladesh, for the broadcasting of the upcoming Nidahas trophy 2018. Sri Lanka Cricket posted on their Twitter, and wrote,

“Thilanga Sumathipala, President of Sri Lanka Cricket says secured world class partners such as Dsports of India & Channel 9 of Bangladesh as Broadcasting and Media Rights and ITW Consulting for Ground Sponsorship & residual media rights for the upcoming Nidahas Trophy 2018.”

“Nidahas Trophy 2018 will be one the most outstanding tournaments that Sri Lanka Cricket will be conducting, both in terms of game and the financial success, says Thilanga Sumathipala, President, SLC.”

It is now confirmed that soon after the conclusion of the Nidahas Trophy 2018, SLC will kick off the preparations for the ‘Lankan Premier League’, reported to be starting from March of 2018.
