Over the past decade, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been home to some of the most naturally gifted hitters of the cricket ball that the world has ever seen. Right from its very inception, the stage that is the IPL has been graced by batting legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Jacques Kallis, Brendon McCullum, Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, David Warner and Chris Gayle to name a few.

Ahead of the upcoming edition of the IPL, we continue this series where we go down the memory lane and list down all the IPL records which have been amassed and accumulated over time.

Here, we take a look at 5 players with the highest strike rates in IPL history.

Note: Players with only an experience of at least 25 IPL matches have been considered while compiling this list.

1. Andre Russell – 173.41

No other country has produced as many match-winners in the T20 short as the West Indies and Andre Russell is certainly one of them. This maverick all-rounder from Jamaica started his IPL journey with the Delhi Daredevils in the year 2012 before being signed on by the Kolkata Knight Riders, a franchise where he truly made his mark.

Russell has played 34 matches in his IPL career, scoring 574 runs with an astounding strike rate of 173.41, the highest among all his peers in the league.

2. Chris Morris – 165.66

Surprised? Don’t be. Ahead of IPL 11, the Delhi Daredevils shelled out a massive amount to retain the services of all-rounder Chris Morris, a man who has at best, a modest international record. But it was for a reason that Morris was retained and his record in the IPL is proof that the Daredevils were in fact right.

Other than his new ball bowling prowess, Morris has the ability to whack the ball a long way and churn out three boundaries in six balls. His career strike rate of 165.66 in the IPL is proof of his big-hitting abilities and he might just be the man to turn around the Daredevils’ fortunes this year.

3. Glenn Maxwell – 164.39

A usual suspect at number three on this list, Australia’s Glenn Maxwell is easily the most exciting batsman plying his trade in world cricket at the moment. Maxwell has long been touted as a genius who is yet to leave a permanent stamp on international cricket with Australia but the ‘Big Show’ is a hot property in the IPL and rightly so.

With a strike rate of almost 165 in 57 matches played, Maxwell had the franchises queuing up for his signature at the IPL mega auction and was eventually bought by the Delhi Daredevils at a massive price of INR 9 crores with coach Ricky Ponting going all out to bring his compatriot on board the Delhi ship.

4. Krunal Pandya – 158.41

Yes, finally an Indian name on this list. Krunal Pandya is the man with the highest career strike rate in IPL among all Indian players. The senior Pandya has been a revelation for the Mumbai Indians and has delivered in the most crunch of situations time and time again, making him a mainstay in captain Rohit Sharma’s MI lineup.

Krunal has a career IPL strike rate of 158.41 and is so crucial for the Mumbai Indians that they used one of their ‘Right To Match’ cards to secure his services for a whopping INR 8 crores at the recent auction in Bangalore.

5. Virender Sehwag – 155.44

The Nawab of Najafgarh has to feature on any list talking about batting strike-rates and here he is. Sehwag played the majority of his IPL career at his home team Delhi Daredevils and later moved on to the Kings XI Punjab for a final hurrah. The legendary Indian opener was an ever present danger at the top of the order during his playing time in the league and his IPL record proves exactly that.

Sehwag played 104 IPL matches during his career and scored his runs at a mightily impressive strike-rate of 155.44. What makes his strike-rate all the more astounding is his longevity and the fact that he featured in way more games of the Indian T20 league among the 5 players on this list.
