India U19 World Cup winning captains
Mohd Kaif (2000)
Speaking of India U19 World Cup winning captains, Mohd Kaif started the youth cricket revolution in India which saw us get the players like Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh and that trend has continued in Indian cricket.
The U19 World Cup in 2000 was held in Sri Lanka where India dominated their way into the knockout rounds. India had topped their group stage and when it came to the semi-final, India breezed past the Aussies by 170 runs to meet the hosts Sri Lanka in final.
On the day, India were too good for the Lankans and went on to win the final by 6 wickets and lift their first ever U19 World Cup title.
Virat Kohli (2008)
Leading from the front has been Virat Kohli’s forte form the beginning as he led India to their second U19 World Cup title back in the year 2008. Kohli scored a crucial century against West Indies to take India to the knockout rounds of the competition.
India beat England in the quarterfinals and were helped by the rain against New Zealand in the semis and when it came down to the final it was India’s bowlers and Kohli’s aggressive captaincy which won India their second U19 World Cup title.
Unmukt Chand (2012)
The only India U19 World Cup winning captain who is yet to play for the senior national team, however, we all remember Chand’s brilliant innings in the final of 2012 U19 World Cup final when he destroyed the Aussies in the final to lift India’s third U19 World Cup title.
Prithvi Shaw joined that elite list of captains today who have lifted the U19 World Cup title for India. Shaw will be playing for Delhi Daredevils in the IPL 2018 so we will get to see a lot more of the flamboyant batsman in coming months and how he continues to progress through the ranks of Indian cricket.
