ICC U19 World Cup 2018: 5 players with highest runs

With a win against Australia in the final of 2018 U19 World Cup, India became the first country in the world to win 4 U19 World Cups. Over the past 3 weeks, Indians have proven to be head and shoulders in the age group. None of the participating teams including heavyweights like Australia and Pakistan had any answer to the performance of the boys in blue, specially India batsmen Shubman Gill and captain Prithvi Shaw.

The Indian performance at the 2018 U19 World Cup was much more about the team effort rather than individual brilliance. Players like Manjot Kalra, who played a superb knock in the final and Shubman Gill, who was the second highest run-scorer of the were the stars for the World Cup winners.

Here we look at the 5 players who scored the most runs in 2018 ICC U19 World Cup.

Alick Athanaze – 418 runs (West Indies)

After suffering two back-to-back heavy defeats, the West Indies U19 team did superbly well to win 3 games in a row before losing the Plate Final to Sri Lanka by just 3 wickets. The change in fortune for the Windies occurred thanks to the performance of star batsman Alick Athanaze, who smashed 2 hundred and 2 fifties in just 6 matches and finished the tournament as the highest run-scorer. His best innings of 116 came against Kenya in the last group match, which the West Indians won by a massive 222 runs.

Shubman Gill – 372 runs (India)

Shubman Gill was just one of the stars from India U19, who were consistent throughout the tournament. Shubman Gill, who was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 1.8 crore in the recently concluded IPL auction, hit an amazing hundred against Pakistan in the semi-final to give India a spot in their 6th U19 World Cup Final. Apart from the hundred, the Punjab boy also managed to score 3 fifties, finishing the tournament with an average of over 124. Shubman Gill ended the ICC U19 World Cup with 2nd highest runs (372).

Raynard van Tonder – 348 runs (South Africa)

South Africa were one of the favourites going into the tournament and they seemed to be living up to that tag with two victories in their first 2 matches. However, like their senior team, the junior capitulated in the quarter-final against Pakistan but they will leave the tournament with their heads held high, especially recollecting the performances of their captain Raynard van Tonder, who smashes 2 centuries and very crucial 82 in the 5th place playoff. Tonder eventually ended up with the 3rd highest runs (348) in the ICC U19 World Cup of 2018.

Finn Allen – 338 runs (New Zealand)

What a tournament it has been for New Zealand, after winning all their 3 group matches, the Kiwis went on to lose their next 3 and finished at a lowly 8 position. However, not everything was dark and gloomy, as Finn Allen finished the tournament with the 4th highest runs with 338 runs, including one hundred and 2 fifties. It was Allen who set the tone for the tournament with a brilliant 115 in the opening match against West Indies.

Keagan Simmons – 319 runs (West Indies)

The 2nd West Indian on the list, Keagan Simmons enjoyed a great tournament as he scored one hundred and one fifty in his 5 innings. The 18-year-old arguably played the innings of the tournament against Canada in the Plate semi-final, as he smashed 166 runs which included a whopping 17 boundaries, and ended up with the 5th highest runs in the ICC tournament of 2018.

The players in the U19 World Cup might not be world famous faces but with performances of such quality, there is no doubt that they will soon be seen donning the colours of their senior national team.
