South African captain Faf Du Plessis was left speechless after Virat Kohli scored his 33rd ODI century to lead India to their first ODI win in South Africa for over 7 years. Du Plessis himself scored a masterful century but Kohli’s innings of 112 helped India chase down the tricky target of 270.
After the match, Faf Du Plessis was gracious in defeat and praised the Indian team for getting the win but also suggested that his batsmen did not put enough runs on the board for the bowlers to put enough pressure on India’s strong batting lineup.
Faf Du Plessis calls Virat Kohli backbone of Indian batting
Faf Du Plessis was full of praises for Virat Kohli and how he manages to shift through the gears while chasing a target. South African skipper rued the opportunity of not dismissing Kohli early in his innings as he is the backbone of Indian batting lineup.
As reported by Cricbuzz, Faf Du Plessis said,
“Yeah he is a very good player when it comes to chasing he is the main man he is a very good controller of the tempo of the innings, he has done that a lot the is experienced a lot he goes through the gears very well. We know he is the backbone of India’s batting and we know that if we get him early we can put the pressure on India but if he stays in the middle he can chase down any total.”
Du Plessis also shared the experience of playing against Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav who made sure South Africa’s middle order did not run away with the game. The wrist spinners managed to get the wickets of Quinton De Kock, David Miller, Jean-Paul Duminy, Aiden Markram, and Chris Morris in the middle over to put a break of South Africa’s run scoring.
Only Du Plessis was playing them with ease and the South African captain suggested that he would share his experience of batting against the duo with his team and help them prepared for the 2nd ODI which will be played at Centurion next week.
