Mumbai Indians used their Right to Match option to retain the promising all-rounder Krunal Pandya ahead of the IPL 2018 for a total sum of 8.8 Cr. In the process, Krunal became the most expensive uncapped player in the history of Indian Premier League.
Krunal attracted a lot of bids from Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Royal Challengers Bangalore with all the teams wanting to make Krunal one of their most expensive signings. However, Mumbai were always going to exercise their RTM option on Krunal.
Prior to the IPL auctions, Mumbai Indians were adamant on keeping their core squad from last season and had earmarked Krunal Pandya along with Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah as one of the 5 players the franchise wanted to retain.
Krunal played a key role in Mumbai’s Indian Premier League success last season and was vital in Mumbai’s 1-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final. There was a great sense of joy and excitement in the Mumbai camp when they signed Krunal Pandya for 8.8 Cr as they had expected other teams bidding in excess of 10 Cr for the Baroda all-rounder.
Having signed for 8.8 Cr, Krunal went past Pawan Negi’s record of 8.5 Cr figure which Delhi paid back in 2016 to make him the most expensive uncapped player in IPL history that time. Krunal has surpassed that figure and is IPL’s most expensive uncapped player.
Despite signing the mega-contract, Krunal would hope to continue his fine performance for Mumbai Indians and look to represent Team India in near future. Krunal’s economical bowling and hard hitting at the tail end of Mumbai’s innings make him an ideal T20 player and is already tipped to have a successful IPL 2018.
Mumbai Indians for their part enjoyed a successful IPL 2018 Auctions as they managed to sign Patt Cummins, JP Duminy, Evin Lewis and Mustafizur Rehman as their key foreign players for the next season of IPL.
Although Mumbai would have wanted another quality spinner in their ranks but they look like a side ready to defender their Indian Premier League title and continue their fine progression under Rohit Sharma’s astute leadership.
