Sunrisers Hyderabad pulled off the biggest surprise deal of the Indian Premier League 2018 auctions when they trumped Kolkata Knight Riders to sign the Indian batting star Manish Pandey for a whooping INR 11.4 Cr.
Manish Pandey was heavily tipped to be retained by KKR using their RTM option but the astronomical bidding saw the Shah Rukh Khan-owned team decided against keeping Pandey at 11.4 Cr.
Having lost Gambhir earlier in the auction, Pandey was seen as Kolkata’s next captain, however, Sunrisers Hyderabad outbid the likes of Kings XI Punjab, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Chennai Super Kings to sign their key target.
Chennai Super Kings opened the bid at 1 Cr and saw the bidding go as high as 8.2 Cr before Sunrisers decided to jump in. Kings XI Punjab kept fighting for Manish but following SRH’s 11 Cr bid, Punjab backed out and allowed Manish to join Sunrisers for the IPL 2018.
Manish Pandey has often shown his capability as a finisher coming late in the batting order but he is equally adept at playing quality bowling attacks if the team has lost early wickets. Manish is an outstanding runner between the wickets, has impeccable boundary hitting abilities and is a brilliant fielder as well.
Above all, he is an Indian batsman who will be available throughout the competition and Manish Pandey can become an integral part of Sunrisers Hyderabad’s squad as they look to regain their Indian Premier League title.
Sunrisers also decided to buy Kane Williamson and Shikhar Dhawan to keep their core and added all-rounders in Shakib Al-Hasan, Carlos Brathwaite, and Yusuf Pathan to give a strong look to their side ahead of the IPL 2018.
It was quite a rewarding IPL auction for the Indian batsmen as not only Manish Pandey but KL Rahul also went for a very high price. The stylish opener and wicketkeeper was purchased by Kings XI Punjab for a whopping amount of 11 Cr.
Another Indian batsman attracting big sum was Karun Nair who was once again purchased by KXIP who have focused on having a strong batting side with Indian players leading their core. IPL sides clearly prioritized picking Indian players at the IPL auction and they were certainly not shy of paying big bucks as we saw with the transfer of Manish Pandey, KL Rahul, and Karun Nair.
