After retaining the services of two-time IPL winning captain MS Dhoni earlier this month, the Chennai Super Kings have now announced that former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming will be re-joining the franchise as their head coach for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League.
The combination of Dhoni as captain and Fleming as coach was crucial to CSK’s fortunes before they were suspended for two years and made the franchise one of the most consistent units in the cash-rich league. Now that the CSK management has roped in Fleming to lead their support staff, expectations will certainly be high from the returning Super Kings this season.
Ever since the BCCI announced that CSK will be making a much-awaited return to the IPL fold in the upcoming season, the franchise has followed a clear strategy of assembling back its previously successful lineup of players and support staff. Following this path, they announced the retention of MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja and are merely continuing the pattern with Fleming’s appointment as coach.
CSK have already announced that former player Michael Hussey will be joining the team as batting coach this year. “We want to retain the entire support staff, with Fleming as the coach and Hussey as the batting coach,” CSK’s newly appointed CEO, Kasi Viswanath, said on Friday (January 19).
