After a record-setting display in the 1st test match, Indian first choice wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha missed out on the 2nd test match due to an injury in his left leg. The hamstring tendon injury in the 33-year-old’s left leg was being monitored by the medical team.
However, in the tests following the injury, it has been made clear that Saha will not be fit for the 3rd test. Hence, the All-India senior selection committee has decided to send in Dinesh Karthik as his replacement. The former Delhi Daredevil batsman, Karthik, might just make it to the starting XI for the 3rd test match as Parthiv has looked very shaky in the first 3 days of the Centurion test match.
If Karthik does make it to the playing XI in Johannesburg, it will be his test match since 2010. The Tamil Nadu batsman has played 23 test matches, in which he has scored over 1000 runs at an average of 27.78. The wicket-keeper played his last test match against Bangladesh in Chittagong.
Kohli and the team management might just be inclined to give Karthik a place in the starting XI over Parthiv, as the former will play an important part in the ODI series. And the opportunity to play in the 3rd test could provide him a good chance to get acclimatized to the conditions.
There were rumours just after the toss that Saha might have dropped from the line-up as Parthiv was better suited to play on the bouncy pitches. However, with this announcement, the BCCI has managed to quash all those rumours.
