Bundesliga side RB Leipzig have confirmed Naby Keita is set to stay at the club till the end of the season through an official statement yesterday.
The statement read: “OFFICIAL: Naby Keita will remain an RB Leipzig player until 30th June 2018. We wish to put the speculation about a January move to Liverpool to bed.”
Liverpool have already agreed to pay his release clause of £48m and an extra £7m to secure his transfer for the summer of 2018, but many reports have suggested Naby Keita is keen on a move in January.
There were even reports claiming Naby Keita has already played his last match for RB Leipzig against Schalke, but it now appears Liverpool have failed to agree an early deal for him.
German media outlet Bild now report the Merseyside club couldn’t agree an early transfer for the 22-year-old because they refused to pay an extra €20m.
Naby Keita’s agent Björn Bezemer met RB Leipzig’s sporting director Ralf Ragnick on Sunday, but couldn’t find an amicable solution.
Sick of the rumours, RB Leipzig decided to put up an official statement, which was also echoed by Ralf Ragnick to the German media.
Ragnick confirmed Liverpool refused to pay up extra for the Guinean star in January and that the player has also accepted the situation.
Rangnick:”We are not giving Naby Keita early, even though Liverpool have once again put their interest in him to sign him in this transfer window. As everyone knows, we are not a selling club.
“A transfer would only have been possible if we had reached an amicable solution in the sense of an additional transfer payment.”
“Even Naby and his representatives have accepted this decision.”
It remains to be seen if Liverpool decide to make another attempt to sign Keita in January, but Bild make it very clear that the 22-year-old hasn’t played his last for RB Leipzig yet.
