Often referred as “The Wall” Rahul Dravid was the backbone of Indian Cricket and carried the team’s batting responsibilities on his ever determined shoulders. Having scored over 24000 international runs, Dravid was equally respected by his peers and rivals.
Today (11 Jan) Dravid turns 45 years old and it will only be apt to revisit some of his best contributions and achievements in world cricket.
We take a look at the top 5 records held or broken by the Wall of Indian Cricket – Rahul Dravid.
1) Rahul Dravid is the first batsman to score 10000+ Test runs, batting at number 3
Arguably the best ever batsman to have played at number 3, Rahul Dravid was a master in any condition which saw him succeed against all kind of bowling attacks.
Dravid amassed 10,254 runs batting at number 3 for India which was a major reason for India’s emergence as a dominant test match side throughout the time period of 2000-2010.
2) Only batsman to share two 300+ partnerships in ODI Cricket
The irony in both the cases was that Rahul Dravid was not named as the man of the match but will certainly be remembered for two of the most outstanding partnerships in ODI cricket.
Both the stands came in the year 1999 with one coming against Sri Lanka at Taunton where Dravid and Saurav Ganguly added 318 runs for the 2nd wicket stand. Dravid made 145 while Ganguly got out for 183.
Second of the mammoth stands came against New Zealand at Hyderabad where Sachin Tendulkar joined in the act and added 331 runs with Dravid where Jammy scored 153.
3) Faced most number of deliveries in test cricket
This stat alone speaks the volume of determination and concentration Rahul Dravid brought with himself everytime he went out to bat.
Dravid was known to frustrate bowlers and bowl at his strengths rather than fending the balls outside off stump and lose his wicket.
Dravid had the ability to battle and play long innings which saw him face 31,258 deliveries in total in his test match career which till date is a world record. No batsman has faced more than 30,000 deliveries apart from Dravid.
4) Most catches in test cricket for a non-wicketkeeper
Rahul Dravid brought way more to the game than just his batting and one of the key aspects was his slip catching ability. Dravid had a very safe pair of hands whether he was standing in the slips or at closing positions against the spinners.
Dravid managed 210 catches from 164 test matches which till date is a record for non-wicketkeepers. Dravid also played many ODI matches for India as the wicketkeeper and sacrificed his luxury for his team’s cause.
5) First ever cricketer to score a century in all 10 Test playing nations
As we mentioned earlier in the piece that Dravid had mastered every playing condition and was a champion against any bowling attack so it is hardly any surprise to know that Dravid was the first ever cricketer to score a century in all the 10 test playing nations.
Be it Australia or Bangladesh, Dravid had a thorough method of batting which was equally effective against pace as well as spin bowling.
One only wonders what would Virat Kohli give up at this very moment to have Rahul Dravid batting at number 3 in the test series vs South Africa?
We would like to wish Rahul Dravid a very happy birthday (11 Jan 2018) and loads of best wishes and success for his Under-19 World Cup campaign with Team India.
