Suresh Raina named Chennai Super Kings’ Vice-Captain for IPL 2018

Suresh Raina, who was absent from Team India’s roster in the past season, has been named as the vice-captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the upcoming season of Indian Premier League (IPL). Raina had earlier captained the (now dysfunctional) Gujarat Lions for the past two seasons, when CSK was banned due to spot-fixing from the Indian top-tier Twenty20 league.

On returning to the fore, CSK who are also known as the ‘yellow brigade’, have retained MS Dhoni as their captain. Under the guidance of the former Team India captain, CSK have reached four IPL finals and have won two trophies as well (2010 and 2011).

Apart from MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina, CSK have also retained India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. As per reports by the Deccan Chronicle, Raina spoke about the CSK squad and said,

MS Dhoni is going to be the captain, I’m going to be the vice-captain, Jadeja is also going to be there. Then there are certain players in the auction. We all will be having a meeting soon and then decide what planning we will be having for the auction.”

The much-hyped 2018 IPL player auction will take place on 27th and 28th January. Now with team sheet in the hands of Dhoni and Raina, CSK will be bidding proactively to make rope in some quality signings at the auction.

As reported by India Today, Suresh Raina said,

“I have already got the sheet, I’ll have a go through it, MS will also go through it. It’s important to have few important quality Indian players.”

Suresh Raina feels CSK will have the best squad in IPL 2018

The 31-year-old Raina added that once CSK is done with the player auction, the club will have the best squad in the IPL this season. He said,

“This year you will have the best team in CSK, I have a feeling. Because two years I have played for Gujarat, he (Dhoni) played in Pune and played a lot of matches for India also and then I’ve been playing a lot of domestic games…I’ve seen a lot of talent.”

Chennai Super Kings have had a roller-coaster ride since the inception the IPL. The club had an excellent run with their core group comprising of Dhoni, Raina and Jadeja. Everything was sunny and breezy for CSK until they got derailed for two years owing to a spot-fixing case. Beginning their new journey in 2018, the yellow brigade acquired their old core group through the power of ‘retention’.

CSK’s retention news had unsurprisingly sent the fans into hysteria. The club added to the celebration by posting the videos of the core triad signing their brand new contracts.

Signing the contract, MS Dhoni, known by CSK fans as “Thala” (meaning ‘leader’), said,

“CSK is very special and I think we have done pretty well in Yellow. The crowds and fans have been fantastic in Chennai and have always given me and the team unconditional love and support. Chennai, I always say, is my second home.”

On the other hand, Suresh Raina said that he was super excited to be back after missing the Chepauk crowd for two years. He said,

“Vanakkam Chennai! Good to be back to CSK after two years. And, looking forward to playing in front of my beautiful crowd and knowledgeable crowd, what I’ve missed the last two years. See you out there, in Chepauk Stadium.”
